My daughter just had her two year check up today and they did a finger prick and her Iron is really low, so they prescribed Ferrous to give her once a day for a month and then go back and recheck it! She does eat vegges and fruits, but she doesn't like her greens, like peas or green beans, she loves broccli which has some iron, and they told me straberries have iron which she loves. So I guess I'll wait and see if the supplement Iron helps and try and give more green veggies. Has anyone else experience this? Thanks!!! |

My son was prescribed iron two weeks ago. He's 14 mos. He WILL NOT take it.... Dr. said to put it in OJ, the VitC helps absorption. I never have given him juice but tried mixing the 2 and putting in a dropper. Now he won't even eat oranges and won't go near any medicine in the dropper... Let me know if you come up with any good tips. I can't even hold him down and force it on him- he still spits it out. Also, be careful- it will stain teeth if it comes in contact. And it will most likely constipate her as well. I gave my son one cut up prune every day to keep him pooping. I don't mean to scare you, they obviously need it, I just can't get him to take it... Good Luck and keep us posted!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Hi Charise, You may want to check out a book called Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. It has quite a bit of info on iron, why it is important that our babies and toddlers get enough, and what the best sources are. My son is only 7 weeks old and still on breast milk alone, but I have been reading through the book and it has a lot of great ideas. Good luck! |

Hi Lauren, well my doctor told me not to mix it with anything because they won't drink it. I just have my husband hold her and I use the dropper and have some water for her to drink right after. But she did gag on it, almost to where she threw up, so I guess it you just have to force it sometimes! I hope she doesn't get constipated, because she has before and it is not fun, I am giving her more fruit such as apples, strawberries which are good in Iron, oranges, and more veggies.Hope you have some luck giving him the dropper for they need it! |

Hi Charise. I talked to the Dr. and she said we can give him iron fortified infant cereal mixed with iron fortified formula daily instead. They will check him again in one month. The other alternatives were to get him to eat more meat every day or take a chewable iron supplement. So... there are alternatives! |

Maybe try giving more and/mixing with iron-fortified cereals...rice cereal is the most gentle on the tummy. Could also try mixing meds with pureed fruits..my girl loved hers with baby applesauce or peaches (cuz she hates the dropper too). Check out the book, What to Expect Toddler Years. They might have some suggestions too. Good luck! |
