Does anyone know of an American ingredient that can be substituted for golden syrup when baking? I keep wanting to bake things from the Edmond's cookbook, but a lot of the recipes I like require golden syrup.
I might be able to get Lyle's golden syrup from Goodwoods British Market, but I was wondering if it tastes the same or works as well as the kind we get in NZ. Has anyone tried Lyles golden syrup?
Thanks,

So my mom in law also brought back two things of golden syrup and some Greggs mixed spice. I use the mixed spice for my special carrot cake and I use the golden syrup for brandy snaps and caramel. I had a Christmas open house in my community and invited a bunch of neighbors to enjoy my just deserts with a kiwi flair. Brandy snaps, trifle, lamingtons, carrot cake, pavlova, fudge cake and caramel to name a few. I now have a reputation but don't make any of these things unless i have a good reason. so...to answer your question, i have never substituted and have never heard of this alternative. If it's called golden syrup then probably would be OK. Guess you can add it to the list when Anita comes over. You never need to use much in a recipe so it can last a long time. Unless you make brandy snaps weekly:) |

Yum! Is mixed spice very different to allspice? I was wondering about that. Sounds like your Christmas open house was a big hit - I'm just sorry I don't live next door to you!
I suspect Anita will be loaded up with things for Emma, so I might just have to find some good American recipes to try. In the meantime, I think I'll have a crack at afghans soon!

I have not tried it yet though, i love to bake and have booght many us recipe books, but i want to make the boys anzac biscuts one day so will try corn syrup eventually. |

Welcome to the group, Anna!
That's a good tip about corn syrup, I was wondering about that. Regarding Anzac biscuits, I have seen some imported from Australia in Mollie Stone's Supermarkets, but I think those stores are only in Calfornia. Maybe other stores import them too? Nothing beats home baking though! |
