Switching to Cow's milk
My daughter will be 1 in about another month and I was wondering what is the best way to switch to cow's milk? Is it best to just do it, or should it be done more gradually? Thanks. Kim

I swtiched my daughter to organic regular milk (no fat free or skim milk) when she turned 1. There was no problem with her at all. You might want to try to give her both formula ad milk for one week, then just give her milk. Good luck,

I switched my son to the one of the 1 plus formulas first. It is like whole milk but gentler for a toddler's stomach.

When we switched my daughter our doctor told us to switch gradually by placing an ounce of milk in her bottle with her formula and adding an ounce every couple of days until she was drinking a full bottle/glass of milk. This worked well. We had to switch to lactose free for awhile but now she drinks milk with no problems. Hope this helps

When switching my son, at about 11 months, we started putting 2 ounces of whole milk to 6 ounces of formula in his bottle. Every week, we replaced 2 ounces of formula with whole milk until at 1 year he was on just whole milk. He took the change really well and we never had any problems. He really likes his milk now, although strawberry milk is his favorite.

They say it should be done gradually due to allergies. When I switched my daughter to milk I did it over a three week time period. The first week I gave her a 1 to 4 ratio of milk to formula. The second week I gave her a 50/50 mixture. The third week I gave her a 4 to 1 ratio of milk to formula. By the forth week she was on plain milk. I used 2% milk. Her daycare used whole milk. She was fine with both.

I would just suggest before switching your daughter to cow's milk that you go to Jenny McCarthy's website Talk About Curing Autism, and read what it has to say about wheat (gluten) and milk (or casein which is a protein in milk). There are many individuals who are highly allergic to both of these products. I understand people put their kids on milk all the time, but just this little bit of research can't do any harm. Google these items and allergies as well.

Although switching to cow's milk is something that each child does, you may want to talk to your pediatrican about what kind of milk to use. I saw that someone said their child drinks 2% milk. I use whole milk for my son and have heard, from his pediatrican as well as other sources, that children should be on whole milk until they reach the age of 2. Then it is ok and even benefitial to switch them to 2%, 1%, or fat free. From my understanding, the reason behind this is that children under 2 need the fat from the milk for brain development and such. If your doctor says 2%, then thats fine. Just thought I would mention it so that, in case you did not know, you could check with your dr to make sure you give him the best milk for his development.

I've got the same question, but I'm still breastfeeding. Is anyone else out there planning on weening off the breast and starting the bottle with cow's milk?
