Stairs!
Hi Everyone! I am new to the group, so HELLO...

My question is my son has discovered the stairs, and can climb up with no assistance (just superclose shadowing by me!), but what is the best way to teach him how to come down? And is now the right time? He will be 9 months next week.
THanks!!

9 months seems a bit early, but good for him if he is starting early! Anyway, the best way I taught my daughter to come down the stairs is by showing her how to turn around with her belly on the stairs and head facing the top and have her slide down on her belly. It is safe and fun! Good luck!

My son also did the same. However it took a few months to get him to come down either by his back or from a sitting position. Just try not to let him get to the stairs unattended for a while. Hr'll eventually get the hang of it.

My daughter has been climbing the steps since she could pull up which was fairly early - about 7 or 8 months. She is now 15 months and still has not mastered coming down the steps. We did however make it a point to teach her to be careful and not go up or down without us. (We have gates, though, too just in case she wants to get adventurous.) To teach her to be careful we just stood behind her and let her fall a little, so she understood that if she doesn't have us there, she might fall. I agree, too, though that belly first is the safest and easiest way to teach them to come down at first - maybe try putting a toy one step behind them while you watch so they have an incentive to go down... I wouldn't leave them alone on the steps though until almost two years old or later, just a thought.

Thanks! Everyone is very helpful! It sounds like the belly is the way to go!!

I remember scooting down the stairs when I was a kid. My mom taught me to sit on a step, hold the railing, and scoot my bottom to the next step down (my feet/legs were used for support and control).
