Kids with speech delay
Public online group

Hi, I'm new here
Hi everyone!

I'm Erin and have 3 kids, Elliot, Owen, and Evie. My son Owen is 3 and has a speech delay. We had him in private speech therapy for about 6 months until he turned 3 and is now enrolled in our school systems special ed. preschool. He recieves speech once a week and they also do speech exercises in class with him. I'm hoping to learn a lot from you all.

Hi Erin. I am pretty new here too. We just found out my son Arden, also 3, has apraxia. We are going to start therapy with him soon...2 times a week with a private therapist and 1 time a week through the schools. It looks like things are going to get really busy really quickly around here with all this going on and we have a 3 month old also :-) Are you seeing a lot of progress since he has been having the therapy? We are thinking about spec. ed. preschool this fall, but aren't sure yet.

if you are considering doing this, PLEASE DO. it is a lifesaver. sometimes speech delay is indicative to the brain's developmental rate. they do catch up but sometimes in the process you get other things such as OT and a lot more structure and controls than i a normal setting

they say the earlier we start the better off the child will be.

i have heard of instances where after speech the IEP is removed. so far that is not the case with my son but he qualifies for an extra year of preschool there (he will be 5 in august). so he will start kindegarten when he is 6, BFD! one of my daughters stayed back a year and it was the best thing that could have happened to her.

so anyhow i am rambling but am so glad there are remedies for things today that can be indicative of other things (i hope that makes sense)

Hi there. How is the special ed preschool working out for him? I have a lot of concerns since our schools want my 3 year to be in a special ed. preschool class next year, and I am not sure if that will really be better for him than the regular class...What factors made your decision for you? I am just so unsure, but definately want him in the class where he will learn the most and where they will help him the most...I am just not sure what the "right" choice is for him.
