Naps
Hi! I have a couple questions reguarding naps. The first one is at a certain age do you think children need less of a nap? My son(23 months) sleeps 2-5 hours in the day in one nap and sleeps 11-12 hours at night. He does however get very cranky sometimes. My other son(5 months) sleeps 1-3 hours during the day at the most. At night he sleeps 7 1/2-10 1/2 as he wakesup on average 6 times to breastfeed. Is he getting enough sleep? Thank you for any input in advance!

My son is also 23 months and sleeps about 12hours a night and will sleep 21/2 - 3 hours during his afternoon nap. I wake him up if he sleeps past the 3 hours because otherwise he doesn't have a restful sleep during the night. My little man has his moments too but I think he is getting the rest he needs. Someone did tell me that they eventually work themselves out of the nap alltogether....usually around 3 yrs of age.

hi I went on babywise.com and it says 6 to 12 months need about 3 hrs during the day and 11 hrs at night.
for 1 to 3 year olds 10 - 13 hrs including a 1 to three hour nap during the day....

remember one thing, every baby is different and the other thing, babies and young kids usually get what they need. At this age they're really concentrated on what they need and that't the trick. It may mean that one baby will be sleeping 8 hours a day and the other will be sleeping 15 hours a day. And both are perfectly fine. My son is 16 months old and sleeping usually from 8pm to 6-8am with less and less wakings (sometimes if he's teething and sometimes to get another bottle of milk, espoecially around 4am) and his naps vary between 40 min and 3 hours. It's one a day but it may be short or long one. Usually the long one comes every few days, lol.
I never did any kind of sleep training or any other method. My son can take me into the bedroom and show me that he wants to go into the crib for a nap. Or will just fall asleep in the stroller or in his chair. At night he just starts to be really wobbly and falling and crying for no reason, than I know he needs to go to crib and he's asleep usually in 30 min.
I really wouldn't worry. Unless You keep him up artifficially, he's gettine as much sleep as he needs at the moment. Babies really tend to get what they want and need.

5 hours really? That seems like a lot during the day. My son is 25 mos and he sleeps about 11 sometimes 12 hours a nitght and anywhere from 2-3 hours during the day at nap time, if he slept more than that during the day I don't think he would sleep at night very well. Does your son go to daycare or somewhere that he gets worn out? If my son goes to an activity during the week like a playday we go to on fridays he usually take a full 3 hour nap and any other intense activities he might have through the week it's the same thing I try not to go to more than 2 or 3 things a week, we play at home and outside everyday but he usually only takes a 2 hour nap then.has your son had his iron checked I think they check that at there 2 year well baby check, you might want to ask your pedi about it. I have a friend who's son is 8 now but has never required much sleep, she said even as a baby he would lay there a lot but hardly sleep he is still like that sleeping only about 8 hours a night, some kids are just different I guess.
