Hi Katey:
My name is Dawn and I have a 15 month old son who has Down Syndrome. My son Shaun has developmental delays as well but he continues to astound me with his continual progress. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in talking.

One thing I've learned is when it comes to developmental delays that no doctor can predict what our kids can and can not do. After my son was dx I was told all the things he wouldn't be able to do. It wasn't until I joined my local support group that I met so many beautiful children that were doing everything the doctors said couldn't happen for them.
Shaun's gross motor skills are not that far behind. He started crawling at 11 months and started cruising at 12 months. He stands on his own but still doesn't have that extra little courage he needs to make those steps on his own. I know it's just a matter of time before he is off and walking. His fine motor skills are a bit more behind but he shows continual progress and that is all that matters to me.
Does Elijah get any type of Early Intervention? Shaun has OT 2x a week and ST 2x a week. Shaun aspirates so he has been working with his ST on feeding issues. Once he gets that controlled then she'll start working on language. Not sure how delayed his language will be. He does say dada, mama, baba, and a bunch of other babble. So all and all he is doing well. Does Elijah have any health issues? Shaun has a few health issues but nothing that can't be controlled through medication. |

well elijah has ot and pt twice a week. he has thyroid issues and a g-tube.he has a bicuspic aortic valve and left pelvic kidney and undesinded testicles.he is doing really good though.everyday is an acomplishment and a joy.i think that the drs only tell us that they will not be able to do things so we dont get our hopes up. |

So glad to hear how well Elijah is doing. He sounds like one little fighter. I love to hear when our kids beat the odds and the negativity of the medical field.
So I noticed you live in Jacksonville. I am planning on moving there next year. I'm in the middle of nursing school and upon completion I wanted to move to Jax. I have some very good friends of mine that I visit quite a bit. Maybe one day we can meet up and let the boys have a play date. |
