Hi Jenny, my name is Alba (Mexican), I can tell you that is not true that the bilingual kids start speaking later because they are bilingual, as a matter of fact to be bilingual is a presicious gift for them is a privilege, the fact is that my two kids are very smart guys (9 and 15) and they didn't delay to speak, the children are very different one to the each other, my liitle son was born In mexico and he start talking at 9 months old!, naturally they learn from there parents and don't worry, you baby will be talking soon both languages and you are going to ask to slow down a little bit like I did with my little son.
Best regards! |

Hallo Jenny, I am a German married to an American who was stationed in Germany. We have two daughters, now 3 and 5, and they are raised bilingual. We just moved to the US last month and the girls were raised hearing mainly German from birth on. We only spoke English at night and on the weekends when my husband was home. They both understand everything that is said to them and do speak pretty well although their German is better right now. I can tell though that they are choosing to speak English more now that we are in the States and I am hoping that with only me talking German to them they won't loose it. My 5 year old started talking when she was a little more then a year old and she surprisingly spoke English first and picked up her German slowly but as soon as she started Kindergarten she spoke mainly German. My 3 year old didn't talk at all until she was 2 and a half years old, only the baby talk that no one can understand. We had her hearing tested and her language abilities and she did well with her hearing test but really bad with the language tests. They wanted me to enroll her into a special program but I was sure it was only because of the bilingual thing. I ended up being right because when she was a 2 and a half she suddenly started speaking in both languages with 3 letter sentences almost over night. It was really amazing and she has caught up rapidly and speaks pretty well now. I was told that bilingual children will be behind their peers until about age 8 at which point they are fluent in both languages as long as they have been hearing and speaking them continuously. I hope this helps but definately keep speaking German to your little boy. It is such a gift to be bilingual. Melde Dich doch mal wenn Du Lust hast. Liebe Grüße, Esther |
