I have a question on what age do you teach ABC's
My daugther is turning two next month, and is talking and saying two word phrases now, we read books everyday, and go to the library once a week for storytime. How or when did you start with the ABC's and did you use flash cards, or books. She has Winnie the Pooh's ABC's she watches, and those foam bath letters we try to teach her with. Just want some more ideas. Thanks!!

I found with my daughter I just sang the ABC song to her over and over and she picked it up really fast that way.She has known them since she was 2 and now it is a year later and she also reconizes them. She can also count too 100 and she knows some spanish but that is from Dora. I feel the more you repeat things the faster they learn and I also feel that kids just love to sing so it is much easier. So good luck. Now I just wish she would potty train. HaHaHa

I started showing my son a video with ABC's and by 17 months he knew almost all of them visually. We also have numbers and shapes. We use flash cards also. The videos are by Babyscapes. It's amazing how much there little brains absorb at such a young age. Now, at 20 months he can count to 10, knows basic shapes, and all of his ABC.

Hi Charise, I agree with Tracy, repitition is key. Singing the song worked for my son (3yrs) He has been singing the ABC song since about 2 and he is just starting to recognize letters and be able to draw them, especially the letters in his name. The foam letters are great for when she gets the hang of it.

My daughter is also turning two next month. She sings and talks a lot.Trying to get her attention to teach her anything is not possible yet, but she is quick learner if you can present it in a song.
Good luck.

I have been singing the abc's to Mikayla since she was like three months. they are like sponges and they hear something repetatively, they absorb it. Mikayla has abc books that we read everyday, and we have dvds, she is 15 months and knows some letters.

Hi! I got a leap frog toy that magnets to the fridge and you can place every letter in the middle and it sings on how each letter makes a different sound. There is also a music button that sings the alphabet. He likes to put the letters in and out. He also dances to the music. He looks like he has a lot of fun.

I love the leapfrog toys, they are great! Colorful, cool music that the kids love, and very educational!

Anything that they enjoy can be used to teach the ABCs! My son LOVES puzzles so, we do his ABC puzzle together. We do it several different ways. Sometimes, I pick up the letter and ask him what it is. If he gets it right then I praise him. If he gets it wrong then I just say the name of the letter and then he will repeat it. We also do the sounds too. So, if I pick up the "B" then I say "B bu-bu-bu B"! He is 3 and knows all the letters and almost all of their sounds.

Anything with letters on it can be used pretty much the same way! A stop sign, ABC books, ANY book!, items at the grocery store, etc. Whatever you child really likes and can keep his/her attention will help. And don't just limit it to one method. Try many different ways so they can see the letters many different ways. Capital, lower case, on signs, in different books, on TV, etc.

Hope this helps! Reading to her everyday is one of THE most precious and educational things that you can do for her! It sounds like you are doing an excellent job with her!

I started my 3.5 year old on ABC's when she was about a year old. I set up a "learning center" in our living room and velcroed the ABC's up on a big chipboard mat and hung it on the wall. The other mat on the wall consists of shapes and colors and numbers. I am just now starting my 14 month old on the boards on the wall. The more they see it and hear it the more they comprehend it. My 14 month old loves it. She is always wanting me to hold her so she can point to them:)

I sing the ABC's every time I wash my son's hand. He won't wash them without the ABC song. He's not able to say them all yet. He's 2 1/2 and we're working on the recognization right now. I work with him every day Mon-Fri with a program called letter of the week.

Hi, I think you can start as early as you want. My son just turned two a couple of weeks ago and I have always read books to him since about two weeks old. I started using the falsh cards you can get at walmart with the letter and picture when he was about a year old. You can put them all over the floor and tell him to either get the picture or the letter and he can pick them out very easily. He is singing the ABC's though somethimes he does miss a letter but he is doing really well. If your daughter likes sticker books at walmart they have the workbooks from pre-school through elementary grades and the book shares the same pictures as the falsh cards, but anyway the little sticker workbook is all about the aphabet and numbers and that has really helped me in teaching my son those things, he can count to thirteen, I dont know where he picked up eleven, twelve and thirteen I think it must have been through some of the books we read becuase I only showed him through ten, like some of the others said they are little sponges. A chalkboard is good to my son has an eisel with the chalkboard on one side and the dry erase on the other and sometimes we will just draw and make letters and he points out the letters, if I say where is the "H" for he can point to it. Have Fun!

arh just turned two in Ja. and can recognize the whole alphabet. she started recognizing at about 23 months and by 25 months she could recognize them all. we used flashcards and books. We first started by asking when we were looking at her books, "where is ?" and she would point but not say it then we start just asking"what letter is this?" and she had them down in two months.we just did it as we played and tried to make it fun. she new her shapes and colors at about 20 months some she new earlier but new them all by 20 months. when we color we say things like "will you give me and she will get the right one.
