The little I've heard about lapbooking sounds very interested to me. Have any of you done it? What were your experiences?
Also, I'm very excited about a computer program I found for helping track attendance and grades (free) and more (upgrade). It's at homeschooltracker.com The basic download is free, and with it I can track attendance, create and record grades for assignments and generate a few reports including Assignment List and Report Card. I'm going to be upgrading to the Plus version for about $40.00 when my husband gets paid for some of the extra features (mainly lesson planning for me). They have an online bulletin board for support and respond quickly to requests for help. Their upgrades for Plus are free unless you want the CD sent to you - that's $5.00. Check it out if you are interested.

Hey Kelly,
I've heard of lapbooking and we've started our own version of it. I use time4learning.com for most of our lesson plans. It does have unit studies. For instance, we just completed "The Vikings". During the lessons we took notes in our Social Studies notebook. We were instructed to print out these little lesson cards, which we placed into an large brown envelope, also marked 'social studies', and it hangs on the wall. We also had a few projects. Once we completed our unit, we took all of the cards and little projects out, and taped them into the notebook on the backs of the pages that we had taken notes, or written ideas.
Our plan is to continue doing that for all of our social studies lessons.
Thanks for the link on the grade tracking. Time4learning.com tracks attendance and grades, but that's only for the lessons you do there. We do additional lessons in georgraphy, our own spelling words, handwriting, music, pe, art and typing. So I've been putting my grades into an excel spreadsheet. I'll check into homeschooltracker.com asap!

In the research I've done, I'm not sure my son would be in to lapbooking, but my daughter might.
You take a regular file folder and open it up flat. Then take the left edge and fold to the center (where the crease is) and do the same with the right edge. The two flaps you've created become the covers to decorate, and when you open it up you can have pockets with booklets or cards, or some display of written work or ark work, or just collected bits about the subject.
You can make more complicated ones by glueing together the flaps of several lapbooks. Wish I'd written down my source, I'm going to have to hunt for it, but I'll find it! |

Here's a picture of a lapbook being made: http://www.canby.com/hockmanchupp/portfolder_instr.html
I can't find the intial link that told what it was. Basically, from what I understand it works great for units studies, or particular topics. Once you complete the study you take the homework, notes or projects and put it into the lapbook you made. Which can be additionally decorated with markers, glitter and clipart; sort of like scrapbooking.
I guess what my duaghter and I are doing is more of notebooking. She's in the 3rd grade; so we use a notebook to take down notes and vocabulary. The curriculum we us has us printing out vocabulary with pictures and defitnitions as well as completing different projects relating to that unit's study. Since we already have the written notes in the notebook; its just made since to take the printed items off the bulletin board (once we are done with that unit) and tape or glue them into the notebook on the back of the pages wrote on (I have her write on the front of the page only). Maybe next year, we will do acutal lapbooking.
