... I think. I'm pretty sure I did.
Lost what? 27,000 words of my fantasy novel about Leroy, the magical turtle who has no magic and has to learn that he is a worthwhile and useful member of society and then convince the other magical turtles that he is useful and worthy.
There are trolls, and vexes (hateful humanoid small people), elves, and a wise old snail, and I'd just decided to add a pymgy goat as a frisky and interesting pack animal, and my computer got sick...very, very sick.
Ho-hum - sigh. No, I wasn't backing up except on the computer. Yes, I'm going to get an automatic back up system - probably an external hard drive - this time.
The local computer guru says he MIGHT be able to get back my data - and he's done it before when my friend, Crystal, thought she'd lost all hers. So I might get it back but I'm thinking not because I tried to do a partition recovery (which didn't work) and then a total recovery, which wipes out everything (and didn't work).
Anywho, while grieving for my novel, I came up with another novel idea, so I'm trying a different way of doing things. I'm telling you, people, I just make work and more work for myself all the time! I can't help it.
On the Leroy novel I was planning in little bits and researching in little bits as I was writing. It was working okay. I wasn't complaining. It was my usual flying by the seat of my pants, so I was comfortable with it.
When I thought about the new story, I didn't want to start writing on it immediately. In fact, I'm thinking I might wait to start the writing until National Novel Writer's Month in November. But I didn't want the idea to get cold, so I've decided to do as much planning as I can between now and then. Detailed character profiles for 4 characters, and shallow character profiles on several others; back stories; creating a new culture on a new planet along with a language for it; forming an outline with scenes I want to inlude (this one is hard for me). I want to have all that done before I start writing so I'm keeping myself busy doing that while I'm waiting to find out the status of my computer.
I know I'll be working on Leroy's story some more. I have it firm enough in my head to write it all again if I have to, but I'm taking a hiatus until I know for sure whether I have to start again at the beginning or if I can just go one from where I was.
There's my writing life - what's going on with yours? |

Ugh I am so sorry you lost it. I hope you can get it back. Glad you have another story in mind though. |

Gosh, Kelly! I am sooo sorry. I have been there. In fact, I am so afaird that I will lose stuff anymore that some times I make to back up disks (just in case). The good thing about writing is that at least it never dies. Ideas are always coming & going. Perhaps, you new story will be even better than the one you lost. (*hugs*) |

Yep - I lost it - or rather, they were going to charge me $50 to try and retrieve any data, with no guaratees, and the comment that it probably wasn't there since I tried to do a complete recovery. Oh well.
That last time I had a big computer problem I decided I'd just use flash drives for my important data, but the flash drive I bought was causing a problem with the computer and I didn't get on with doing something else.
I am going to invest in an external hard drive or tape drive and schedule automatic backups from now on, though. |

Good luck at WriMo! I'm going to be participating this year and I know how hard it is. Double good luck. |
