Always follow the washing instructions that come from the manufacture for your diapers here is a general washing cycle – you may need to come up with one that works for you
1. If really soiled do a presoak (if your washer allows) 2. If not really soiled start here. Do a cold water rinse with no detergent 3. Hot water wash with ½ amount detergent you would usually use about ¼ cup worth of regular NOT HE detergent. If washing prefold ONLY you can add ½ cup vinegar (some people will use a Downey ball for this) during the rinse cycle (Vinegar is used to help brighten and is a natural fabric softener, deodorizer and helps kill bacteria. Vinegar should not be used on diaper covers and/or AIO’s cause it can damage the waterproofing.). Also do not use fabric softener it will “clog” the fibers in the cloth and decrease the absorbance of the diapers. 4. Do a hot water 2nd rinse - check during the rinse cycle for bubbles in the water if there are bubbles present then the detergent isn’t completely rinsed out yet – You will need to do another rinse, repeat till no more bubbles. If you find after two rinses that there are still a lot of bubbles then you need to use less detergent when you wash 5. Dry in the dryer medium heat – if you add a dry towel it will help with dry time as the towel will soak up some of the moisture- or sun them on a line to get them extra white.
If you have stains try to hang the diapers in the sun after washing as it naturally removes the stain also Bac-Out by Biokleen is a great product for stains.
Tips for Washing your diapers
• There is no “right” way to wash you need to find what works for you. • Use a Dry diaper pail, wet ones are just a breeding ground for bacteria, • Dump out any feces into the toilet before putting into the diapers pail – diaper sprayers work really well for rinsing off the diapers and eliminates the need to “dunk” diapers into the toilet. – breastfed babies feces does not usually stain • Wash your diapers at the most every 3 days • Use a laundry detergent that is free of perfumes and dyes to avoid irritation to the baby’s skin. • Sunlight works wonders in getting stains out of diapers. • Do not use Dreft or Fabric Softeners or perfumed detergent as they will coat - clog the fibers of the diapers and decrease the absorbency • You will need to wash and dry your New Diapers 2-3 times before use to prep them for the best absorbency. Prefold will usually shrink about 10% with the 1st wash and they will become softer with washings. • Make sure the Velcro tabs are fastened to the laundry tab on the inside of the diaper to prevent them from sticking to the diapers in the wash – you can also turn them inside out and fasten the diaper together
I like to add 1/2 cup of Baking Soda to the wash cycle ( I do the Downey Ball w/vinegar thing too!). The combination really restores the PH balance in dipes, which comes in handy if they were pre-owned and had a weird urine smell.... !
