So I went to a meeting last night for breastfeeding and I felt like an inadequate mother. I planned to get my daughter to stop by like 11-13 months and here I am with women that are BF 3 year olds it was strange, I am pro BF but it seems a bit overdone at times, I could understand if you are in poverty to still feed your 5 year old but to me it's like a pacifier or a bottle there should be a limit. I feel bad at times for thinking that. I am just confused by it all. I love the connection I have with my daughter and I had with my son, but when a kid is telling you "yuck I don't want to" and you still force it instead of weening them there is a problem. Or if you can have a conversation it is just odd. I am sorry if I offend anyone I know it is a touchy subject but like I said I felt bad for thinking it should be sooner than later. Am I wrong should it be longer? |

I don't think you should feel bad. You must do what is right for you and your family. I know a lot of moms that BF as long as they can. Although I don't think it should be forced. I also have talked to moms that pump after the child is a certain age and give it in a cup. I for one feel that BM is the healthiest for all babies and toddlers. I also wouldn't put down a mom for using formula or choosing to stop. |

To each their own. I justed didnt want my child pulling up my shirt in a store or anything when he was 2 to 3. This is my personal thing. I had two very close so weaned the youngest early they are 15 months apart and I was tired. I have seen kids get hurt and right away want to nurse for comfort, so that was my big thing. although my last one weaned himself at 15 or so months because he wanted a cup like his sister and everyone else. It was sad, for me as I knew he was the last one and that bond is so, so strong while nursing. |

i get a little creeped out when people do it for so long. i have a friend that still does it to her 3 year old. the little girl can walk and talk and everything. just my personal opinion, but i think when they are no longer babies, they dont need to be on your breast |

I hope I don't offend anyone either, but, Jaimi, I agree with you. I kind of get creeped out with parents who breastfeed for such a long time. My friend has a 3 year old and when he wants the breast, literally, he throws a tantrum wherever he is because he wants to suck. I am not sure if he's drinking or not, but when the kid is attacking your shirt at the mall becuase he wants your breast, I felt very creeped out! |

I was unsure with my first child how and when it would stop, because a lot of people were saying they weaned because of breastfeeding in public. I no longer had a problem when at 8 mos. he just stopped taking the breast. I have no idea how I am going to do with my second son. |
