My son is 2 and almost trained..I started early though. I use to have him walk around the house naked and take him to the potty every 15 minutes. It was hard for me at first but then i just seemed to get into a routine. Everytime he went on the potty we would sing a potty song (randomly made one up). After he started getting the hang of things I took him to Target and let him pick out his own underwear. Now everytime he puts them on he says "No pee pee on Shrek"..we bought Shrek underwear. I still put him in a diaper when he sleeps...im not that brave yet!
My girlfriend used a chart for her child and put stickers on it every time they used the potty. After a row was filled then they got a toy (doesnt have to be expensive, maybe something from the $1 store or something) So maybe if you do that for everytime your son poops in the potty....maybe he will be excited about it.
Dont be discouraged, it will happen ... he wont poop his pants forever. My nephew is 3 and has NO intrest in the potty at all. Look at the bright side, your son is wearing underwear and knows what he is suppose to do.
Hope at least some of that novel helped you..LOL

I know my friend started with his son who is 2 years and 9 months old. Try to decorate his potty train with stickers of his favorite toy and she did like a chart and when he did good week he got an Ice Cream or lollipop etc... and If he by mistake poop just said it was an accident and sometimes happend but do not scared him and do not force him to seat.I dont know if it was a good advice but my son is 2 years old I have not go throuhg that yet.

I am SOOO glad that you wrote in!!! I was going to write in today and ask the same question! My son is 3 and 10 months and has NO interest in potty training! I have tried setting a schedule and putting him on the potty but, with everything else going on during the day...sometimes being here and sometimes not being at home...the schedule has fallen by the wayside! I am so glad to hear that he is not the only 3 (almost 4 yr old) that is not potty trained yet! I also have a 2 yr. old and am hoping that his brother's delay will not make him delay too. I have tried to put my 2 yr. old on the potty but, he doesn't want to and keeps saying "Ryan's potty". I can't put him in underwear because then I am changing his outfits numerous times during the day and sometimes not at home to do it! Also, if he poops in his underwear...yea...I am gagging and in the bathroom vomitting! So, at least your son is IN underwear!! Keep trying and keep us updated! I am looking forward to a bunch of comments so that I can find SOMETHING that will work! I sometimes feel that he's going to be going off to college some day and STILL not potty trained!

My oldest was easy enough to potty train though it did take him longer to poop. I used the sticker and treat method LOL. For every time he went on the potty he got a sticker and after so many sticker he got some kind of treat.

Now with my youngest I could have sworn I would end up sending him to collage in depends ugh! He was so hard!! I tried everything with him. I tried the sticker a treat method but he didn't care, I tried the new underwear method, again he just didn't care (Mind you I stuck with each method for a while before I moved on). I even tried the no diaper on but you know what the stinker would do? He would hold it till I put a diaper on him! He would literally hold it for hours! So I got worried he would make himself get an UTI or something so to be honest I gave up. He finally just started doing it by himself. I had tried potty training him from the time he was about 2 and 1/2 and he wasn't potty trained till sometime after he was 4! In the end he did it on his own and was both pee and poop trained all on his own. For him it was a control issue and he liked having control over something. So I suggest maybe for a week not even mentioning about the potty and slowly ask him do you need to go potty? Or even use oh look your friend (fill in the blank) is going potty. Don't compare them of course just mention that one of his friends is going potty and he may want to do what his friend was doing. My youngest finally saw that his big brother went on the potty and had big boy underwear so he wanted to also. I am also happy to report too that he only had a couple accidents after he was potty trained and that was at night. So then I started making sure he went potty before going to bed and never had a problem again. Now he is six years old and you would have never known just how stubborn he was LOL. Good Luck I so remember those days!!

I have a stubborn boy. We have been off and on since I can't even remember when I started. He would forget he was wearing underwear. Anyway, he is 3 1/2 and I needed to get him trained because I am putting him in preschool and don't want anyone changing him. So. first thing I did was show him where the poopy went. I bought 5 elaborate gifts I know he would love. I printed out a train chart from http://www.childavenue.com/pages/family_corner_pages/printables.html
Then I put one sticker for just sitting 10 minutes on the potty with or without going.(for the first week) Then one sticker for pee pee and two stickers for poopy(3rd) and then two stickers for telling me that he needs to go pee pee or poopy and actually going.(5th week). I constatly would ask him if he was dry or wet. I would take him to the potty and just make him sit. YES MAKE HIM.
I can say it took 2 months for me to figure it out and for him to follow.
I can't say it will work for you but it is worth a shot to try anything.
Good luck.

My son is 17 months and I am about to start training him. the potty has been out, he's familiar with it and I think has an idea what's for but we haven't seriously been working towards it yet. I expect it will be a long and interesting road ahead. I did get him to pee pee in there once and he was quite thrilled.

If your son is into videos there is one out there called "Potty Power". It is geared towards boys and girls and is very cute.

My son is 3, he will be 4 in a couple months. I have finally potty trained him, he has accidents every once in a while but not nearly as bad as before. What worked for me was something another mother mentioned. We would set the timer of the microwave for 60 minutes and when the timer went off he would sit on the potty, whether he had to go or not, it didn't matter. I praised like crazy (even if he just farted on the tiolet...lol) We made up pooping songs and I would dance around while he sat. He would laugh and laugh. I usually only made him sit for about 5 minutes, then he would get off and I would race him to the timer to reset it. I let him press the buttons so he felt like he was a part of it. I swear to you, it only took 3 days of timing and he starting going on his own, without even setting the timer. I would walk past the bathroom and he would be sitting there peeing or pooping and I would almost faint. It was honestly a miracle!! I still praise like crazy, even though it is getting annoying, but I swear once I honestly started to praise and stick with it, he just got it. Please stay strong. I spent many a days crying and screaming and washing (or throwing away) poppy underwear. He will get it!

I rewarded my kid with candy. It worked great. I thought it was a bad idea at first, but at some point you'll try anything. PeePee we used stickers and that was fine, but poop was a struggle till we brought out the tootsie rolls. He would get 2 (of the little ones) when he pooped on the potty. He asked for them for a long time after, but now it's business as usual in there. To my and maybe your surprise, the dovtor was actually the one who suggested this!!

I used the sticker chart and when it was filled he got a new train, after about 4 filled charts he is now potty trained, and I am leaving the filled chart up by the potty to remind him, I just forgot to by more stickers, but what realley helped was seeing his friend from our moms group go poopy on the potty he wanted to just be like him, they are about a month apart in age, but once I started I never went back to diapers during the day just stressed that big boys don't wear diapers during the day just babies, if he asks for a diaper I just distract him and put the underwear on. and if he poops in his underwear remember to take him to the bathroom and put the poopy in the tolite with him there and wipe hime there too, they figure it out its just easier to put it there in the first place!

Hi Carla,

My son turned two in Feb and I had been working on potty training not pressuring him just mentioning it throughout the day and let him go to the potty if he wanted, well he started holding it, I think because it hurt once before and from then on he continued to do it, the Dr. said it was behavioral, it hurt once so it will hurt again so I'm going to keep holding it, she told me to hold off on the PT training for 5 to 6 months, I was like WHAT so she said boys don't typically get trained till 3 1/2 and not all the way until after that. One thing that I do with my son is a little like reverse psychology, I wanted him to eat peas the other day and he wouldn't so I said to him " just try one for mama" so he did and I clapped and said Yea for you and the kid ate the whole can of peas after that it just took some clapping and saying Yea your a big boy for eating your peas, maybe something like that would work, kids love to hear positive things and loved to be encouraged when they have done something well, but we have to understand there are accidents so we don't want to be negative when he has an accident. And if there is something he really likes such as lollipops or M&M's give him one or a few of those things when he goes to the potty

my boys would start to "hide" (go under the table or behind a curtain) to do their buisness so i just watched for the signs and grunting then hustled them to the bathroom. I never used the floor pottys, they wanted to be big boys so I just got an adapter ring. They were both trained by 2 and 3/4 yrs, I agree with the gal about it being a control issue, I got my son to quit sucking his thumb by just stopping pointing it out to him, once other kids started making fun of him he stopped. good luck

I used gummy bears, everytime he would go pee pee, we would yell yeah! and he would get a gummy bear...I did use the ping pong ball trick too...I put the ball in the toliet and we would "aim" for it. He liked it and it was fun. The best part is the ping pong ball doesnt flush so you dont have to take it out just leave it in for next time..your husband likes to "aim" too...LOL

Pooping was a little harder but after a few hide and poop episodes instead of going to the potty, I gave him a box of wipes and sat in the bathroom with him while he cleaned himself up. I was not mean, I was not hateful about it and I certianly didnt make him feel bad about it, I simply told him if he had an accident he had to clean it up, just like when you knock something over, you pick it up. He didnt cry or get upset, in fact he seem to understand when I was explaining it to him...I know this sounds mean to some of you, but he never did it agian. I guess he didnt like it and thought it easier to go on the potty. Different things work for different little boys, mine understands better by hands on, rather than telling him over and over...

Show him the school he will be going to - and keep remainding him that he can only go after he goes poop in the potty - it will sink in at some point.

Good luck...

My son is 4 and just started to pee in the potty.

I had the same problem with my 3 year old. Tried everything and finally the only thing that worked (and given your son's age I think it will work for him too) was having him wear pants without underwear. I knew he wouldn't want to poop and have it fall down his leg/pants. It worked the first day I tried it and we've never had problems since. He was old enough for me to explain what I was doing and why I was doing it which I think helped. I just told him the truth - something like "I know you're having trouble with pooping on the potty and I think that if you don't wear underwear, you won't want to poop in your pants because it will be so messy and you will try the potty instead..." Give it a try - I think it'll work. Good luck!
