Taking photos
Hello,

My name is Trish and I like to take photos.........all kinds of photos. The only thing is I don't think that I am very good at taking photos of family members and other people. Does anyone have any tips that might help? I think that my photos of things outdoors are good most of the time, but I would like to get better at it. I have never taken any classes, but I have thought about it. I do have a few of my photos in my profile.

Thanks,
Trish

Hi Trish. Your outdoor shots are lovely! I don't see any people shots so I can't comment on them. What don't you like about them? If you post a few, maybe we can offer suggestions.

Thanks for the comment about my photos. Most of my people shots either end up with red eye or they look set up, not natural. Even the ones that are not planed.

What kind of camera are you using? Point-and-shoot or SLR?

It is a Canon Power Shot A520 Digital camera. It has 4X optical zoom and 4.0 mega pixels. I don't know a lot about cameras, so I am not sure if this one is a good one to have or not. I wish I did know more, because like I have been saying I love to take pictures. It was a gift for Christmas 2006. I like it for the most part.

Canon point & shoots are great and easy to use. If you're getting a lot of red-eye in your shots, maybe the red-eye reduction feature is turned off.

No matter what kind of camera you have, on-camera flash is never attractive. It always creates harsh shadows and doesn't allow the light to sculpt the subject at all.

If you want to take better portraits with your P&S, your best option is to move your subject outdoors (or a nice bright room), use only available light and leave the flash turned off. Under these conditions I've seen some tremendous shots from P&S's.

Let us know if this helps!
