Parents that choose to NOT vaccinate
Public online group

Hello
Hello,

I hope I am able to post on this message board although I will vaccinate my child eventually, before school. I'm not looking to be criticized for my decision. Rather, I am seeking info on how to work with my pediatrician. My baby girl is 3 1/2 months. Last month she was to receive the first round of vaccinations, but I declined them. My plan is to delay then until she is closer to school age and then I will only be receiving them on a certain schedule one at a time. The doctor was less than thrilled with me, which is fine. He gave me his opinion on their importance, ect. I told him my thoughts on the matter and that was it.

Today we went for our next well baby visit. I had some other concerns..coughing, diarrhea, ect. He came in and right away the vaccination debate began. I explained that I understand his point and I hope he can make an attempt to understand mine. I told him that at some point she would receive them, but not now. I explained my concerns for them, ect, but he really wasn't having any of it. He then attempted to conclude the office visit...before addressing the concerns I mentioned about the coughing, diarrhea, ect. I had to remind him of them. He checked them and then started the vaccination debate again.

I left the office frustrated and feeling like I am a bad mother and putting my child in unnecessary danger. I can completely respect his stance, but for him to totally ignore and belittle my concerns just is aggravating. How do you deal with a doctor who is so pro-vaccine that he is not willing to work with you in any way? I have attempted to search online for doctors more friendly in this area, but have been unsuccessful (I am in Southern NJ).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Debbie,
Welcome to the group. No criticism here. Not all peds will work with parents on this issue. I don't know why they don't show a little more respect to parents. I found my ped through my chiropractor and discussed the issue while I was still pregnant. She knows that I have had some medical training and knew I was making an informed choice. Now in NJ you have medical and religious exemptions, you may want to find another ped and just say it is against your beliefs (they can not ask your religion). That way for the moment they won’t hound you, and then you can do the shots later if you chose to. I found this Dr. from another site that I am on I think he is about 30 miles from you. Dr Kevin McAveney with Underwood Family Care Mullica Hill NJ. I do hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Oh dear gawd;everytime I go to the dr w Lexi thats the first thing they start in on me about! I tell them; okay 1 more time, this is what happened before! Then they send me to the vaccine clinic and i hear it from those relentless biotches there.I dont give a damn what kind of schooling you have;dont tell me Im stupid; because I dont want you to give my child that vaccine. Then they go and get their supervisor who is an RN,and an even bigger biotch that acts holier then thou towards you.I got another vaccine paper in the mail 3 days ago.Im sure 1 of these days Im gonna get a knock on my door from some clinic ppl.Hubby seems to think that you can get in bad trouble for it.We shall see.

Lexi,
I am sorry that you or anyone else feels that someone is breaking the law by not vaccinating. My personal beliefs are the most important reason that I chose not to. Here is our first amendment and a couple of definitions describing religion.

Amendment I
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction.

Something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience

Some woman that goes to my 9yr old daughters school told me that her friend tried that and she had to prove she went to a church that didnt believe in vaccines and get a signed document from the minister. The school was going to press charges on her for neglect endangerment weird stuff like that.Ive only gotten 1 shot DT for Lexi and she was sick for 3 months afterwards off and on.

It is against our constitution for someone to ask or ask for proof of religion. You are in Michigan and you can use the philosophical exemption so your religion should not be an issue.

I stopped taking my son to the pediatrician after his 4 month well baby visit and never once vaccinated him. Another thing is I made my husband come with me when we went for our first visit when vaxcinations were discussed so that we were there together and the ped saw that. I have found a different ped that supports parent who do not vaccinate in the nxt state that I will use after I birth my second child and we only visit the doctor when absolutely necessary and thankfully we have not had any reason to go ever. I appreciate all the doctors out there and what they do but I feel that they are put up too high on a pedestal by society and made out to be like the god's of human health when they are the ones being paid by the patients and should be respectful and esteem theirpatients as higher than them in that they are the ones paying for the service not for their opinion.
