Since Feb. 7-14th is Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) Awareness Week, I wanted to get some information out about it to raise awareness about conditions that affect approx. 40,000 babies each year in the U.S.
A CHD is a heart defect that a baby is born with. It is the most frequently occurring birth defect and is a leading cause of birth-defect related deaths worldwide.
Some CHDs may only require visits to a Pediatric Cardiologist, others can be treated with medications or repaired with surgery. Complex defects may require several surgeries and are never really cured.
Many cases of Sudden Cardiac Death in young athletes are caused by undiagnosed CHDs.
Newborns and teen-aged athletes are NOT routinely screened for CHDs and a disproportionately small amount of funding is available for research and support.
One of my twin daughters had this at birth. Emergency surgery was performed awhen she was born. Wen just visited with the Cardiologist and she was given a clean bill of health.
Hi Danica. Thank you for responding! I'm glad to hear your little one is doing well. My reason for shedding light on this topic is due to the fact that my son was born with a rare heart defect called truncus arteriosus. He had one surgery at 4 days old. He will need more, but is currently he is doing well. Will your baby need any more surgeries?
