Is it just the "Terrible Twos?"
Hi all, I haven't posted anything in a long time because things have been going well but we are having an issue that is troubling me. Our daughter is 2 1/2 and she is speech delayed. She has been receiving weekly therapy for about 6 months now & is making great progress. She also started school in Sept. & is doing well. Here is the deal. She'll ask for something and then immediately change her mind leaving us guessing all the time. (ex. Princess Bowl. NO! NO PRINCESS BOWL) She will ask for a movie or TV show, then we put it on and she doesn't want it. She constantly wants to be carried by me, freaks out if my husband tries to do ANYTHING for her, and is generally being very difficult. She also has meltdowns is something doesn't go EXACTLY as she wants it. (ex. she wants Elmo & I have to rewind it or set up On Demand or something) She starts banging her head and throwing her toys and such. When we try time-outs she laughs at us and refuses to stay on her time out step. I take things away as punishment but the behavior doesn't change. She also will hit me when she gets frustrated. I am really at my wits end and I am seriously wondering if maybe she does have something like PDD-NOS, which they thought she might have before her therapy started. She has been seen by a developmental pediatrician and he seems to be leaning toward ADD, but wants to see her again in June. HELP!!!! Does anyone have ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Wow!! This sounds just like my daughter who is also 2 1/2. She just started speech therapy because she really isn't talking all that much, more using first 2 letter sounds of the word. Since she doesn't talk much I have a heck of a time trying to figure out what she wants!! She'll often throw fits because I put the wrong show on or give her the wrong thing to eat. I'm spending so much time trying the guess. I've statrted to have her show me what she wants. I've cut pictures from magazines or drawn pictures. It seems to make it a bit easier. My daughter hits me when she's frustrated, I can only imagine how frustratinbg it is being a child and having mommy not understand what she wants. We just constanly reinforce "gentle touches". What exactly is PDD-NOS?? My ped. doesn't seem to be too concerned about her speech, but I am. I know everyone develops at a different rate though. Here's wishing good luck to us both : )

Hi Kimberely,
Thanks for your input. I am glad to hear that you have gotten your daughter into speech therapy. It will make the world of difference! They should tell you to make a picture board. It is easy to do and I would be happy to help you with it. It is VERY helpful. Lauren used to have many more episodes of banging her head and such before she started therapy. It is only in the last month or so that she has been getting really difficult again. I started her on speech therapy because I was concerned about the head banging. PDD-NOS is a developmental disorder that is considered on the Autism spectrum. The doctor doesn't think she has it, but I am overly cautious. Let me know if you want more info. on the picture board.
Thanks and good luck,
Jennifer

Sounds like Lexi.Shes very hi-maintenance.Shed rather me than her dad also. Its cause I stay w her and he has to sleep cause hes a 3rd shifter. So I give her all she needs during the day while he sleeps. Her bro and sis help me after they get home but she prefers me.I know when she starts pre-school if I send her; then shell grow out of all that.I try and play w her when she wants,re-direct her at timesand I try to get her to self-soothe, but it doesnt last very long.I just think of it this way;one day she wont want me fussing over her and since shes our last one;Im going to enjoy it for as long as it lasts.

Hi! I just wanted you to know you are not the only one with these issues. :) My son is 2 1/2 and acts the same way....Some days are harder than others...he freaks out around his grandma.....But he makes up for his behavior with hugs that melt my heart.

I know a lot of other people have problems with their kids too. I just worry about Lauren because of her speech delay. I love the fact that she wants to be with me and I know if won't last so I DO savor it! She does spend time with her Daddy, it just depends on her mood and behavior that day. I just have to remind myself on the bad days that she won't be two forever.

My daughter does the same thing with the asking for something and then throwing fits when you try to give it to her.I don't know whats up with that either .Wow they sound like they act very similar. i know a lot of children her age that are super active .personally she sounds like she's acting like other children her age.Try your best not to figure out what's "wrong" with her unless the doctors are 1000% sure there's a problem.Which from what i've seen in other children including mine it doesn't sound like it.

Thanks for your input! Lauren doesn't have any other little kids around to play with that I can compare their behavior with. I know that all kids are different, but there are certain things that they all do at that age, and with her being my only one I don't have much basis to go on.

I am new to this group and very glad to see that I am not the only one. My daughter is 2 1/2. Everything that all of you have said, my daughter does. There are times that it seems like my precious girl has been taken over by an alien. She will ask for something and then when we try to give it to her, she will throw herself onto the floor in what I can only describe as a classic movie scene tantrum.
