Nutrition for Toddlers
Hey all,

I was wondering when it's a good time to stop feeding your child baby food. My daughter is 1 year old and only has 4 teeth (two top and two bottom) so there isn't a lot that she can eat on her own. We are still giving her several jars of baby food a day plus yogurt and some other things that she can chew (English muffin broken into bite-sized pieces, egg yolk cut in to small pieces and things like that), but we wanted to start weaning her off of the baby food. It seems like she's really getting tired of it and I'm not really sure how to do this. Part of it is ignorance on my part - the other part is nervousness. With the baby food I know that she is getting what she needs each day - calories, nutrients, etc... I guess I'm just a little nervous to make the change over. Any advice? Help!

Have you tried the Graduate meals? They worked good for my son. They also have pasta pick ups and soups that he really liked.

If she is showing an interest in your food then just be sure they are small and soft for her to chew. I also used the Gerber graduates, and my daughter liked them. I still use formula for older babies, just to be sure she is getting nutrients and since she won't drink milk. You can also ask your ped about a multivitamin. They will usually prescribe them in liquid.

I have tried some of the Graduate meals. There just doesn't seem to be a huge variety of foods past stage 2 from any of the baby food makers. Also, the Graduate meals have a fair amount of sodium in them that concerns me a bit. My daughter is breastfed and has never had much formula. I might try giving her some, though, to help with the nutrient supplementation.

Have you read the book Super Baby Food? This author walks parents through every stage of babyhood month to month. She indicates what nutirtion a baby needs, when , and how to get it. There are tons of awesome recipes in the back, too. It is at first glance, too much work for working parents, but if you have the time, there are some great ideas for food prep and storage. I use it as a reference book, as I am a working mom with very little time for food prep, but I am grateful to have someone telling me what a baby can eat at various stages.

Hi Stephanie, my son is also 1 year old. He has a few more teeth but still no molars, so he gums most things. I haven't given him baby food for a couple months now. I give him small pieces of just about everything that we eat. Small pieces of meat, cheese, fruit, veggies, applesauce (no added sugar), yogurt, pasta, toast, quick oats (not the pre-packed kind) with raisins (they soften when warm), cut up grilled cheese, everything but juice and nuts, honey, etc. that they cannot have yet. He has also been exclusively breastfed but I have started to wean him a little, I'll still nurse for awhile but would like to give him whole milk during the day. He loves it. We actually tried it for the first time today! Always get the ok from your dr. first though on that. I asked our pediatrician about the 9-24 month formula and she said that it was all hype. I also agree with you on the gerber graduates. I do have a couple handy, but only for 'emergency situations'. Good luck! Oh, and there is also a group on this site for nutritious recipes for kids.
