My 15 month old has just discovered biting. I know that you are supposed to calmly tell them that it hurts and that it isn't nice. Well, he thinks it is absolutely hilarious when I say that. He doesn't seem to care much about listening to me. Any suggestions? |

I second that if someone has some advice on this I'd LOVE to hear it! My son has been doing since he started getting teeth (4 months) and he's got almost all of his teeth now, it HURTS. He actually drew blood and left a mark on dad earlier tonight. |

When you calmly say that hurts and it isn't nice, what tone of voice are you using? If you're using a sweet "Aw honey, that's not nice" sing song voice, then of course he's going to think it's funny. Also, if you are pretty much lethargic most of the time, and that's the only way he can get a reaction out of you, he'll keep doing it just to get your attention. It'll take time, but you'll learn the mommy voice-the one that's not too sweet and not too mean, but gets everyone in the house's attention and let's them know that you mean what you say. It's taken me about 10 years, but I think I've just about got it mastered myself. ; )
My advice about biting is one that won't be popular, I can tell you that. But here goes: when my little ones bite, I bite them back (just barely enough for them to feel it) so that they can see how it hurts. It usually only takes once for them to understand. It'll break his little heart, but he'll get the picture. Of course, don't ever do this unless you are in complete control and not at all angry. And don't let other kids see it either, or they'll mimic.
Take it or leave it. Hope that helps. |
