Hello, my 17 month old son uses a binky in his crib to soothe himself. Since birth he's used the NUK binkies, and I've always gotten the silicone kind, not latex. Well, we're thinking about de-binking (Ha) him after his second birthday, and he's in need of some new binkies when he turns 18 months. My problem is that NUK only makes binkies for 18 months and up in latex. I don't remember exactly why I was told by friends not to use latex, but I don't want to switch brands now. Why is latex considered bad in a paci, and has anyone had any issues? Should I just buy the latex ones and relax? Comments please.....thanks in advance! :)

Hey Lauren,
Mark uses a binky too for night time and sick cranky time only. I'm not sure why they suggest a different pacifier for the 18 mth older crowd...I wasn't planning to switch, as Mark likes a certain shape.
Hope this helps! Latex has the ability to melt in hot temps, so maybe that's a contributing factor?

Hi Andrea - thanks for your comment! I've decided that when he turns 18 onths, I'll just get the NUK paci's in latex as I don't want to change the style/shape of Anthony's binky either. I read that the concern has a lot to do with latex allergies, but Anthony actually used the latex kind for a bit before I was told by a friend to make the switch to silicone, and we had no problems then so (knock on wood) I'm sure we'll be ok. :) Talk to you soon :) |

I never Increased the size w/ my son he wouldn't take any other pacifier, I doubt it would do any harm to just continue using the pacifiers you were using, My son used to chew through them and when he chew through the last one he trew it away. he only asked for it about twice and with in three days he forgot all about it, he was 20 months when we did it. |

Hi Lauren...
My son is 15 months and sure loves his NUK binkie too! He never liked a binkie when he was a small baby but now loves it at night. I agree with the other woman who said that it has to do with latex allergies. I'm sure they make them bigger to adapt to the growing mouth and teeth. Did you contact NUK to see why they made the change to latex in the bigger size? Michelle |

i think the only problem with latex that i know of is that they dont last as long and you cant boil them over and over like the silicone ones. but if you are planning on breaking the habbit soon anyways. it doesnt really matter |

Thanks again everyone for your comments and advice! I actually decided to just go ahead and buy the 18 month latex ones, and my son HATED them! They were much bigger and he just spit it out and cried, so I went back to the store and bought the good old silicone ones I had been using...we're happy at bed time once again! :) |

Okay here is my suggestion.
Get rid of them
We just got rid of our sons' pacis. They were almost 3 and almost 2. It turned into a huge nightmare. Everytime we went somewhere or if they got mad or nap time or nighttime oranything. It became a huge hassle to alsways rememebr to have a paci.
So one day we got rid of them it took two days until they stopped freaking out about not having one. It was hard but we stuck to our guns. And now it is some much nicer.
They have learned to calm themselves instead of relying on the paci. Which is what they need to do anyway. And let me say the longer you wait the harder it is to do it.
We tried several times and it was a no go. Finally it worked.
I know how hard it is to do it but man I am so glad they are gone! |

Binkys are bad bad bad!I suggest going cold turkey and getting rid of all of them. They will only cry for about 3 days. They are bad for your teeth. It pushes them out. |

Hello, and Thanks again for the advice. I spoke with my pediatrician about some binky concerns I had, and was assured that there is nothing wrong with binky use at all, unless it interferes with speech development, and since Anthony only uses it during sleep, this isn't a problem. There is no truth to the rumor that a paci intereferes with proper tooth development..in fact I was told that a binky could be used up until the time baby teeth fall out and as long as the habit was broken before adult teeth came in, there's no reason for concern. Binkies will not push teeth out, or mess up tooth alignment at all. Of course we'll move away from the binky long before adult teeth come in, but for now, I'm trusting the pediatrician and staying happy with our decision to let our little guy keep the binky he likes at bedtime. Also, the binky is sooting for him while he's still teething. I'm not a fan of "cold turkey" when it comes to my little one, and the thought of him crying for days over a harmless piece of plastic is really not for me. I know different things work for different Mama's, but that's just my opinion. Have a great day everyone! |

My son Isaac (now 3yrs) loved his binkie, I hated the idea of it, as did my MIL but it seemed to soothe him and hey I needed the quite time ever once in a while. I never bought a bigger size for him because I was afraid it would be a waste of money figuring he would probably hate the new one. I was happy to break him of it and we haven't looked back. When he was about 18mo I was able to break it by pretending that he threw it out the car window. He was always throwing it at me in the car. Once I told him it was gone, he never looked back (I was lucky!!) I don't think it interferred with his speech having a smaller one (newborn size) than he probably should have had, in fact half the time I can't get him to stop talking..lol. Sometimes they are ready to give it up, its us moms who think they aren't ready. Good luck with whatever you decide. |

see now my sons dr and his speech therapist and dentist said that my son already had teeth effects from having the pacifier. I guess it depends on who your dr is. thanks
