I have another question...
and I'm sure this won't be the last one! :))) I was wondering what ages your children were when you began homeschooling. My daughter is 2, so I have plenty of time to prepare and do my research. I was thinking age 5. What do you all think? Thanks again! :)) Oh, also! I just learned of a homeschool convention in my state (Florida) that is coming up in the beginning of April. I'm sure that will be a very good way to learn much more about it as well.

We didn't actually start homeschooling till my oldest was 5 years old. But you could do little stuff when they are 3 and even 4 years old like helping with counting and abc's and such. Even in Kindergarten the most important thing you could do is play. Children really do learn a lot by playing at that young. So don't worry about anything truly structure for a while. Just enjoy your daughter. That's great about the convention. Just remember don't feel overwhelmed and just because they say one way to homeschool or another doesn't mean yours will be like that and that doesn't make the way you do it not good enough. Do what you feel is right for your family. No two homeschools are the same. Please feel free to ask any questions!

Thank you very much! I've been doing some reading and I'm very glad to see that there is no one set required curriculum for everyone. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of homeschooling, and the more sense it makes to me. I'm also very impressed about how far ahead in scholastics a lot of homeschooled children are compared to some other kids their age. It makes sense, though, because they don't have a lot of the interruptions and distractions or negative influences that they would have in regular school. I haven't heard a lot of very good things about the public schools in my area, so that is another reason why I am giving this very serious consideration. Thanks again for your help! :))

Birth, really. I just started calling what I've been doing "officially" homeschooling recently, shortly before my son turned 3 though. I decided to do that mostly to justify the spending of more money on cool "educational" stuff for him. It is actually stuff I would want for him anyway I think though, like art supplies, books, and quality toys like those made by Melissa & Doug

When you think about it you are home schooling from birth. So you have already started with the basics. For both my children we started with curriculum at about 4/5 and we used it very loosely because we believe that all of life is a classroom. We have always done "field trips" to learn in a see, touch, smell etc.environment and then incorporate it into many other lessons. But as said before - what works for you and your family is all that really matters.

I consider that everyone homeschools from birth also. Even if your children go to public school, you are still homeschooling in areas other than academic subjects and if you do any following up on what they are learning at school or helping with homework, or otherwise supplementing, then you are homeschooling adademics, too.

Christine,
Every one has been giving you some very good advice on this subject. I agree no age is too young to start and you really do start teaching at birth in a lot of ways. I started teaching my son his shapes, colors, numbers, and abcs at 8 months by the time he was two he was ready for reading, writing, spelling, adding, and subtracting. They have a lot of different videos and toys that teach preschool stuff very well such as leap frog and seasame street. Good luck with home schooling!

I've already begun with reading to her when she was a week old, and with the educational toys too. Every day, it seems like she learns something new. She likes to scribble and draw, so for Christmas, we got her a Playskool desk with a board on it and some washable markers! :)) We're having a ball!
