OPINION- Just want to share somethings I have learned. Sorry if it is biased due to my opinion.
I have attached an article from the St Petersburg Times. Working with parents and their children I see a lot of things that parents do that shock me. They leave their newborn on the edge of the crib with the rail down, if only they new the baby in the next room had a fractured skull from falling off the bed and a mother who is having a hard time forgiving herself. Some parents know what they are doing. They either don't care or feel they are doing the right thing. They are the ones that say "I know my child". They're right up there with the parents who respond "not in the house" when asked if anyone at home smokes. I think that part of knowing your child is knowing that anything could happen and being prepared for it. The rest of the parents just don't know better. No one tole them. It's not all common knowledge. I thankfully have the passion and the time to read and research and learn. I have always loved kids. Since I finished school I have loved pediatrics. And since I became pregnant I have actively researched child care. Along the way I have stumbled upon information that I would have never thought to look for. This article talks about the risks associated with co sleeping.
"... at least 20 children in Florida who died from co-sleeping that year. It was the second leading cause of death, behind drowning, in cases of child deaths that the state considers the result of neglect."

Whenever I see something on "the dangers of co-sleeping", my thought is how many children die alone in their cribs every year. It is a LOT higher number than co-sleeping deaths. There is a growing amount of evidence that co-sleeping actually can help prevent SIDS. As the end of the article you posted a link to indicates, there is a right way and a wrong way to co-sleep. Just like putting a baby in a crib, you want to make sure you have as safe of a sleep environment as possible, so no soft bedding, blankets, stuffed animals, or obese parents.
Here are some more links about positive co-sleeping: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/10/t102200.asp http://kellymom.com/parenting/sleep/familybed.html http://www.attachmentparenting.com/artbenefitscosleep.shtml
