Hi. We have been blessed with a wonderful daughter born this past October. She is 2 1/2 months. For about a month we've been dealing with colic from about 5pm until 10pm. We've tried gripe water, mylicon, holding, rocking, singing, ect. Nothing calms her. Had her checked out and doctors found nothing wrong, thankfully. So we just have to wait out the colic deal.
We've been perplexed by a couple of things though and wondered if anyone else experienced this or had any thoughts on the subject. There are times when we are able to console her by walking around or even just standing. If we are just standing up with her, even holding still...she can be okay. But if you sit down...while she is still in the same exact position...she screams bloody murder. We've experimented with this alot. We can hold her in one constant position and stand up ... she quiets. Sit directly down and she screams. Why on earth this is we have no clue...any thoughts? We don't mind walking the floor and standing up with her...but for 12 hours a day? Our backs and legs are killing us.
Any suggestions or thoughts on why this minor change causes such an outburst from her would be greatly appreciated!

Lol isn't it funny that they know when you are standing or sitting! My daughter did this only a couple nights (she wasn't colicy but very constipated). My youngest brother was very colicy the only thing that calmed him was the vaccum cleaner. What about a carrier, maybe she wouldn't notice the sitting down as much? I'm sorry I don't really have any suggestions. |

The vacuum was a wonderful noise when my daughter went through this. Something to do with the noise she would just stop crying, which was great b/c the more they cry the more air they take into their bellies and the gassier they get. There is a product that vibrates their bellies and that works well too. |

Hi Debbie, We had a very similar issue with our son that started around 5 weeks, we also did all kinds of tests and all the Dr's could come up with is he may have minor acid reflux (minus all the spitting up) we had him on some medication for the reflux, cant remember the name but it didn’t seem to help much and I ended up taking him off it early. This progressively got worse, no one was getting much sleep and it was so hard to see our baby in so much pain. What I figured with all the research I've done is that it has to do with the digestive system not being fully developed yet. Have faith that things will get better and your little girl will be fine. I could go on and on, but in short by three months old he was a normal happy baby. The one thing I found to help him allot was Colic Calm, The key ingredient in ColicCalm is carbo vegetabilis (vegetable charcoal). You can read all about it on their website http://www.coliccalm.com/index.html I'd be more than happy to chat if you want. Hang in there.. ~Grace

Debbie,
My heart goes out to you. Our daughter screamed nearly every minute she wasn't eating or sleeping until she was 3 months old. It is so hard and stressful, but like magic it was gone by 12 or 13 weeks. Youb are in the home stretch! RoseMarie really like the exercise ball. We would hold her, sit on the ball and either bounce or rock. Gradually, as she calmed down, we moved less and less, but she still prefered for us to sit on the ball then the couch or a chair. Swaddeling worked really well for RoseMarie. Even after she could wiggle her little arms out of the swaddel, she was calmer if we swaddled her from her armpits down. Finally, we read the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block". It really helped us feel better to know that there was nother wrong with our daughter (or our parenting).
Good Luck,
Celeste |

Hi Debbie, I can imagine how tiring it can be for you..my son was the same way. He also had acid reflux for the first 6 months...yeah it was fun lol! We used the same techniques the other ladies have posted....the swaddling, the swing, the vibrations, & the white noise (the calming noise radios). He really relaxed whenever he was swaddled & rocked sideways on our laps! We learned a lot from the Happiest baby on the block video...it is excellent, a lifesaver, as Celeste mentioned. It's was not easy at all, but rest assured it will not last forever, u will probably get lucky & not have to deal with it for as long as I did! Hope it helps, God Bless |
