constipation?
My daughter is 9 months old and has having a difficult time passing a bm. (I know it's normal for them to turn red and grunt a little.) She is turning red, grunting, and pushing to put the point that at times its causing her to throw up a little. She eats 6-9 tbsp of cereal a day along with a fruit and veggie. Should I decrease the amount of cereal? Give her more fruit? She also drinks up to 4 ounces of juice a day. (4 ounces is the max. she's allowed) Is this normal? Is there anything I can do? I feel so bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using rice cereal? This can make it worse, I always used oatmeal for my daughter. She also had very bad constipation. Try some prunes or some juice mixed with water or just plain water. If it doesn't stop you may want to ask your ped if you can give her a laxative, you don't want her to have an anal fissure. I also used a little Vaseline on her bottom which helped.

I do rice in the afternoon. Oatmeal in the morning. (Sometimes mixed cereal in the evening or a stage 2 gerber dinner)

When my daughter was that age I only gave her cereal in the morning mixed with fruits. Then for lunch and dinner I would give some veggies. Bananas can also cause this, you may want to not give them for a few days. Is she drinking formula? This too would constipate my daughter, I would sometimes add a little water to it. I would defiantly try the Vaseline or a little diaper rash cream can help too. I know how frustrating this can be, I went through it for months.

I think we all have felt the same way..I do know it is normal. And that when my son was around that age and even sometimes now being 2 our ped. always tells us to make sure he is getting enough fiber and water. Some things that have lots of fiber in it are oatmeal, apples, raisens, carrots, broccoli. Since your daughter is still very young alot of these things you will have to puree. It is worth a shot and maybe it will help! I know when we did this with my son it seemed to help. Good luck! Hope all gets better!

I would suggest trying prunes, prune juice, or pear juice. Glycering suppositories might work too if the bm is right in the rectum. If its higher up, they won't work. Also, ask your doctor before giving the suppository as I'm not sure about the "safe" age range.

Cute picture! My daughter has had the same problem all of her life and all I got from the Dr.'s was, "Give her lots of fiber". We do give her lots of fiber.....apples, dried fruit, etc. If you can get her to drink prune juice, this helps. None of that totally relieved my daughter so that she didn't have to strain until a new Dr. perscribed Miralax. I put a recommended dose in her juice every morning and she is fine now (she is 4.5 years old). It used to be a perscription, but now we can buy it over the counter. The Dr. says it is safe to be on it for years. We are slowly weaning her down to less and less, but it has really made a difference. But please check with your Dr. because I don't know if it is appropriate for your daughter's age.

I thought more fiber would cause constipation. She has her well visit next week, I am definetely going to discuss it then. I am giving her apple/prune juice today and hopes that it will help her. She also had prunes for breakfast. She is passing bm's it is just very difficult for her. Hopefully all these prunes will make a difference.

Fiber will only cause constipation if lots of fluids aren't taken with it. My son had the same problem, but he grew out of it. I had him on soy formula because lactose was to hard on him and gave him oatmeal cereal all the time because even the tiniest amount of rice cereal constipated him. I started giving him apple juice and apple sauce( which worked very well!!). But eventually he did grow out of it. I this helps some.

My daughter is just a little younger then your's and we had the very same problem, she went days without passing a bm.

Now every time she looks like she's seriously trying to pass a bm I sit her on the loo (toilet) and she worked out very quickly that it's easy to pass bm there - Gravity is working with her and no nappy to stop the progress.... She'll sometimes go twice daily now, in the loo! We very rarely have false alarms.

We also do what other people have recommended for you, I mix her morning cereal with prune juice....(could only buy a huge bottle, so I froze it in ice cube trays - and we defrost as we need). For lunch and Dinner she gets lots of pears, apples etc.... things are going well for us now.

Good luck Amanda
