constipation?
My daughter is 9 months old and has having a difficult time passing a bm. (I know it's normal for them to turn red and grunt a little.) She is turning red, grunting, and pushing to put the point that at times its causing her to throw up a little. She eats 6-9 tbsp of cereal a day along with a fruit and veggie. Should I decrease the amount of cereal? Give her more fruit? She also drinks up to 4 ounces of juice a day. (4 ounces is the max. she's allowed) Is this normal? Is there anything I can do? I feel so bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Amanda, I understand how upsetting this is. My daughter is 7.5 months old and she had such a hard time pooping 12/24 that she was screaming in pain. My daughter is on breast milk and my pediatrician said a) they don't consider it contstipation unless they are pooping little peeble-shaped stool or no BM for more then 7 days, b) to try pears and pear juice (worked within a few hours, they said applejuice is a close secound), and c) to avoid bananas (they are constipating). I didn't ask the MD re: cereal volume but I had read elsewhere to keep cereal at a max of 1/4 cup/day or 4 Tbs. We do 2 Tbs in the morning with a fruit and 2 Tbs in the afternoon with veggie.

Good Luck!

Thank you! How much fruit and veggie do you offer?

Prunes also work really well. I gave them as is or would also dilute them with water and put them in a bottle if it got really bad- that worked like magic!

Amanda, we give RoseMarie about 2 Tbs of fruit or veggie at each serving. However, you may need to give you daughter more then that. RoseMarie is still breastfeeding as much as she was before we added solids and I haven't been really trying hard to change that. Sounds like your daughter would want/need more then that.
I have also heard other people talk re: feeing three meals/day of solids. Frankly, I have been a little too lazy to add ANOTHER round of feedings to the routine, but I figure we will by the time she hits 9 months.
Hope that helps.

My 6 month old has that problem too. We give her watered down prune juice which helps.

My daughter had a really hard time when we first started giving her solids. Not untill afterwards did my friend tell me that orange veggies (ie. squash, carrots, potatoes, etc) cause constipation. The Dr. told us to get dark Karo syrup we put one teaspoon in 3 oz of water which worked. I now give her prunes every so often (to eat) and we have apple/prune juice that I found at the store which is great too ( I also mix that with water). I have found that as long as I don't give her too much of those veggies in a row she's ok. I hope some of this advice helps!! I know how upsetting it can be for you and your daughter.

Orange veggies are her favorite. I didn't know they were constipating. I just bought some apple/prune juice. Thank you everyone for your suggestions

Hi there!
Hope by now your daughter is better! Just wanted to share with you another advice!

My daughter is also 9months old and had the same kind of problem just few days ago. I called her pedi and she said not to give her a pear, which she loves, that may couse the the constipation and not to give her cereals at all as they have an iron which is giving a hard time with a poop. She suggested also to buy a Glycerine suppository and use it rectal asap. I did that and she is just perfect now. No more troubles with the poop.

Hi amanda,
I've found that gerber apple prune juice does the trick for katie when she's gets a little constipated. I give her one ounce of juice with one ounce of water, and in about an hour, voila! Normal poop! I don't like suppositories, and neither does kaite so we don't use them.

Hi my daughter is 9 months old also. We had that problem every time I introduced new foods. Try a different cereal maybe barley or oatmeal if you use rice. Then revisit it later once her stomach can handle different foods. I always mix a half a container of fruit with her cereal and have cut out cereal for dinner. She gets about 4 tbsp total and she now has 2 bms a day! Try to get her to eat some greens the garden veggie mix was the easiest for me to start with.

Good luck!

Hope she is better by now but here is my advice anyways. My daughter had the SAME problem and it's still happening. What we do is offer her the "p" juices. Pear & Prune.

After a bit of that she should loosen right up. If not, talk to your ped. about it, they might be able to offer more help.

Dark Karo syrup mixed with warm water works like a charm, but has to be the dark Karo. By the book, she can have four ounces of juice a day, but if you dilute the juice with four ounces of water and give her two of thos bottles a day, thus increasing her fluids it will also help.
