I planned ahead here quite a bit, as I knew I wanted to be able to be home with my kids and that I didn't want to put them in daycare but I wanted to have an income. So.....about 10 years ago I went back to school (4 months FT is all it took) to get a certificate as a medical transcriptionist. I now work FT at home making very good money for a large hospital. It's very rewarding but it does have it's drawbacks. For one, I miss grown-up conversation. My daughter (21 months old) and I get out weekly for Gymboree and errands but most of my friends either have no children or children who are much older. Needless to say, I'm home A LOT. It's definitely NOT for everyone but sure beats having to put your child in daycare (and pay a huge chunk of your paycheck and handing your child over to people who don't have a vested interest in them). My husband and I live in a city that neither of us grew up in so we don't have a lot of family support (except for my mother who is more than willing to help) so my staying home works ideally. Unfortunately, another drawback is that my husband and I don't have much time to ourselves or each other because my husband watches her as soon as he gets home from work so I can start my workday. We keep reminding ourselves that the time is going so quickly and soon she'll be in preschool at least a few hours a week so that'll help give us some time back....and before we know it she'll be in school all day and then we'll miss these days. Time goes waaaay too fast.
