I know alot of us use these for our babies. I just wanted to share this information I received from a mom board.
"Please forgive any syntactical and grammatical errors that might occur in this post. I just returned from the Children's Medical Center ER. We gave Brooks his usual dose of teething tablets before bed last night as he was drooling heavily and teething. He even has 2 bumps where the bottom teeth are coming in. Around 1 AM he began turning his head from side to side and flailing in his co-sleeper. I picked him up to nurse him thinking that he might be able to nurse and go back to sleep. He refused the breast but never cried. We put him in the bed with us and he continued to move CONSTANTLY. He couldn't stay still. Eric took him downstairs to rock him but he wouldn't go to sleep. He brought him back upstairs and my eyes got used to the darkness so I could focus on him. He looked out of it. His pupils were so dilated and he was moving constantly. He was extremely tactile. He wanted to touch everything. He didn't make any noise. He wouldn't coo or cry. He wouldn't smile or even give us any sign that he was recognizing us. He seemed to be tripping on LSD or something similar. It appeared that he was having petite mall seizures. He couldn't focus on us or anything and he would move involuntarily non stop. I looked online because I suspected that the Bella Donna was giving him this reaction. I searched and searched for negative information regarding Hylands prior to buying it but I never found any. Finally, I decided to look up Bella Donna overdose. He was displaying all the symptoms. After a few hours of this and 2 heavy poopy diapers we took him to the ER. He hadn't slept in 13 hours nor had a wet diaper.
HE HAD BELLA DONNA POISONING. They took the bottle from us and did some preliminary tests. Each table was drastically different from the other. The Bella Donna in one table was more than 100 times what the bottle indicates. The National poison control people said they are seeing this more and more. Hylands are not regulated by the FDA or any other organization so there is no way to be sure that the amount of Bella Donna in each tablet is safe.
I am writing this to you because I care about you. Brooks has been using Hylands for over a month and was fine! We just purchased this new bottle 2 days ago and finally opened it yesterday. Even if your child is fine with it now, the next bottle could have a dangerous amount in it. Bella Donna, also known as Deadly Nightshade, causes hallucinations, fever, inability to perspire or urinate, loss of appetite, siezures. Hylands gets away with putting it in tablets because they claim that there is only .003% in their product. If you have lower than a certain percentage of an illegal substance in your product it can still be legal.
He would not take any breast milk from me nor from a bottle. He couldn't keep still long enough to nurse. Looking at my child and having him not recognize me or respond is the most scary thing in the world. They had to flush his system out and give him Enfalyte (Infant pedialyte). I would post this warning on the boards but I know people will claim that I did something wrong that I OVERDOSED him. I assure you we gave him 2 tablets twice yesterday and that is all. The 2nd dose was at midnight and it was over 6 hours after the first dose. I had reservations about using this product at first. I shared those reservations with Katie but when Brooks responded favorably to the product, I kept using it.
NO AMOUNT OF SLEEP FOR THE BABY OR YOU IS WORTH WHAT WE JUST WENT THROUGH
We opted to go home after the 6 hours of observation because they didn't have any rooms available. They said if he doesn't improve to our satisfaction we can brinig him back again. They let us go after he finally peed. Seriously, he didn't sleep, eat, or pee for 14 hours!! He didn't cry or make a sound when they examined him. He never cried once when they did all the tests. He HATES his carseat and didn't make a sound when we put him in it. I knew something was wrong. The Dr. said that she suspects more children are being affected by this but that parents aren't paying attention to these signs. Once he had a wet diaper he started to coo a bit. Each time he would make another wet diaper he became a little more like himself. His pupils are still a bit dilated but he crashed in the car. Eric is sleeping with him. I am still too hyped up.

| Wow that is really scary! I have been using Hyland's teething tablets on my son for the last 5 months and haven't had anything but success. I've tried Tylenol and Ibuprofen for his teething pain, but nothing has worked like these tablets. Have you heard from any other families with similar problems? |

According the website, Hylands products are FDA regulated, so belladonna poisoning shouldn't be possible if parents are using he product responsibly.

Hyland's Teething Tablets Safety Information

As a manufacturer of homeopathic medicines, and as parents ourselves, we want to share with you how Hyland’s Teething Tablets are made and what they contain to effectively and safely alleviate your child’s teething aches and pains.
First and foremost, homeopathic medicines are regulated as drugs by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as required in the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The production of Hyland’s homeopathic medicines occurs within a validated process, as with any FDA-regulated drug, to ensure an accepted level of consistency in product output.
Hyland’s Teething Tablets contain homeopathically prepared forms of Calcarea Phosphorica, Chamomilla, Coffea Cruda, and Belladonna. These ingredients are all prepared in accordance with the Homeopathic Pharmacopœia of the United States (HPUS). HPUS has been recognized by the FDA since 1938 as the official compendium (or formula book) for homeopathic medicine in the U.S. When homeopathically prepared, active ingredients are diluted to the point that the risk of toxicity is extremely low (see specific details below).
Calcarea Phosphorica is included in Hyland’s Teething Tablets for its ability to support teeth formation. Chamomilla is included in the Tablets for its actions on irritability commonly associated with teething pain. Coffea Cruda is included in the Tablets for its actions on wakefulness and increased urination.
Belladonna is included in the Tablets to ease the redness, inflammation and discomfort of the child’s gum that often occurs during the teething process. Belladonna 3X HPUS is manufactured from the whole plant, of which a small portion is Belladonna alkaloids (the component sometimes associated with side effects). Each Teething Tablet (which weighs about 65 mg) is composed of 0.0003% Belladonna alkaloids as stated on the label. This means that each complete teething tablet contains only approximately 0.0002 mg of Belladonna alkaloids.
The amount of Belladonna alkaloids in teething tablets is minuscule, especially when compared to conventional medicine. Conventional medicines typically use 0.2 to 5 mg of Belladonna alkaloids per tablet as an anti-spasmodic – roughly 1,000 to 25,000 times larger than the quantities used in Hyland’s Teething Tablets. The side effects sometimes caused by conventional medicines delivering more than 0.2 mg of Belladonna alkaloids – such as dry mouth, blurred vision and urinary retention – are not associated with homeopathic medicines because of their minute dosage.
To put homeopathic dosages in perspective, typically a 10-pound child would need to ingest 1,000 Hyland’s Teething Tablets (at least 6 bottles of 125 tablets) to exhibit even the first possible side effect of Belladonna.
