Hello, I have an 11 month old baby girl that crawls everywhere. I also have a small house 850 sq feet (with a little yard). When I get home from work I have to put the dogs outside or behind a children's gate in the kitchen or bedroom. It breaks my heart because they are craving attention. My husband says they should not be in the living room with the baby crawling because they may run her over if they get excited (they have never harmed her). I love them to death, but my husband believes leaving them in the small back yard is okay because baby should be first. I disagree and believe we need to incorporate them somehow. Any thoughts? |

Hi Malena...We just recently moved to a way smaller house from where we were living. I have two daughters ages 3 and 1 and also have a VERY hyperactive golden retriever. Even when my girls were small and crawling, we have let our dog run around our kids. It is amazing how gentle dogs are around children. Once she gets near them, she is so gentle how she walks around them and even when she plays with them she know she can't be to rough. My suggestion is, stay close to your daughter, but let them out around her and if there is any uneasyness or something that doesnt feel right, it is probably better that you keep them separated but not completely. they are going to have to realize that they are not going to be able to get all you attention for a while, but do try to make time during the day where you are giving your dogs attention so they don't feel left out. This is what worked for us, hope this works out for you! |

Thank you so much. I had my husband read you're response and we decided to be more laid back about the dogs and the baby. We were probably making the dogs nervous. Anyways they have been great with her. I took them on a hike Sunday morning and left Leila (my 11 month old daughter) with my husband. It's hard to leave her, but watching the dogs crash for the rest of the day and having them out of our hair is worth the two hours. Plus my husband gets to care for Leila which is good for him. Talk to you soon. |

That is so great to hear that it worked out for you guys! It definately helps to have your animals calm and happy and not craving for attention when you are trying to take care of your baby. That way you can focus on your baby and not the baby AND the dogs. As long as you make sure you are making "doggy time" everything will be great. Have a great day! |
