Hi, Rachel. My son is in the 4th grade and although he does quite well in reading, he HATES it. He's supposed to read every night for 20 minutes. And I tell you, it's like pulling teeth! He'll fight me, put it off (i'll do it later, mom), etc. Anyone with suggestions about how to make reading fun?
I really don't have any ideas for your son, Rachel, I'm sorry! But when my son was younger I read to him (or at least tried to) every night. When he could read, I had him read to me. When he had trouble pronouncing a word, we'd go over it together so he'd learn how to say it. |

Our teacher has him in a reading program which is helping greatly. He does read every nite or so to me. He has his moments too. Thanks for writing to me. |

I think the trick lies in variety of books and also letting him go sometimes..my experience with my second grader is he doesn't seem interested in anything which is forced on him each day..although I suffer more in making him eat less and do his bit of excercising than reading..he is fine in that. |

Hi, My youngest son is in 3rd grade and he is able to read well but he does not like to at all. I have had to really work with him. Have him read to me and me read to him. Also getting books within his interests helps a lot. If he reads something that he likes and then talk about what he learned from the book. Sometimes when they see what they learned and that reading can be fun it helps. Desiree |

My daughter is in the 3rd grade and I guess I am lucky. Her step-sister taught her to read the first yr we moved here when she was 5.They played school all summer long. She even taught my 11 yr old to read better also.My daughter now picks out books she wants to read at the library every 2 r 3 weeks when we go.She reads at night to get sleepy.I always had tons of baby books and toddler books laying around. The family always read to her and him when they were younger. My 1.5 yr old is getting the same treatment. She has tons of books to look at and we have a reading chaise we sit on to read.Let your child look at age appropiate magazines.Fun articles is a way to get them to read more.Tell em to read aloud and for others not to make fun of them when they struggle w words.Use the word that they struggle with in a funny sentence that they will appreciate only and they will start to remember them better. We also being computer ppl bought the children several fun learning pc programs w reading in them. They learned more words and didnt even know it was teaching them.Hope this helps. |
