I have known for some time that we have a number of spiritual belief systems represented on this group. The most vocal so far are the Christians or those who believe in a God similar to the Christian God.
There are no problems right now but I want to encourage everyone to exercise tolerance of spiritual language and ideas when presented in the context of homeschooling one's own children. Proselytizing would not be appropriate for this group, nor challenging another's spiritual beliefs because this is a group for supporting and encouraging one another regarding homeschooling; but I don't want anyone to feel that they have to hold back saying something about their spirituality and how it affects their homeschooling (such as when I say that I believe God's plan is for me to homeschool my children and that He will someday hold be accountable for their educational development).
My two groups here on raisingthem.com are the most mature groups I've been a member of regarding tolerance for one another and staying on the subject of the group. I don't anticipate ever having any problems due to spiritual differences, and want everyone to know they can be comfortable here.
If you ever have sincere questions about another's spiritual beliefs, I ask that you contact them directly for more information. You can also contact me and I will do my best to head you in the right direction. I also ask that you do not contact the members of this forum to spread the good news of your spiritual beliefs. Everyone signed up here specifically for homeschooling support and we should respect that. Also, there are several spiritual/religious groups represented in other raisingthem.com groups that are designed for religious discussion. You can find such groups by cliking on "Groups" above and entering the name of the spiritual/religious belief system that you are interested in in the search box.
Thank you for your patience - Thank you for your tolerance - Thank you for your participation.

VERY COOL! I like that you are separating religion from homeschooling in your group and ask that every one else does the same. |

I guess it's wanting a separation of homeschooling support activities and religous activities on the site.
I'm not asking that religion or spirituality not be mentioned at all, but that it not be the main topic of what is discussed.
There is a big difference between, "What method might I use to teach my child the Ten Commandments" replied by, "Drawing pictures while talking about each commandment and singing songs might work" compared to a reply like, "Why would you teach your child such archaic and out of place beliefs?" (I've actually seen this sort of thing happen on a group elsewhere - I got called all kinds of names when I mentioned Bible as one of our subjects).
I believe if you are intelligent enough to do what it takes to begin homeschooling inf the first place, you are more than equal to the task of deciding what your child needs to be taught - or if you subscribe to unschooling, then I believe that's another intelligent choice that should not be put down.
Although I'd never teach my children about sexual intercourse at age 5, there are families who do that very thing and if they ask a "how" question then they need a "how" answer. IF they ask for feedback on age or appropriateness, then it's ok to kindly state your views without questioning the person's intellect, motives, or sanity. If you don't have a "how" answer, just don't post back.
I began using the internet over 10 years ago and this site, raisingthem.com, has the most mature, accepting, and supporting patronage of any site I've been on. Ever. Period. I want it to stay that way, and I'll work to make it so.
I want to thank each and every one of you who takes the time to read and/or post on this group, because not only are you supporting other homeschoolers, you have all role modeled what it takes to get along with each other in this world and really make a difference in someone's life! |

Great post and I so agree with you. I am a Christian but to me it's not my right to judge other's for their belief's or how they teach their children. I also don't like preaching to others about my beliefs either because before I was a "Christian" I was preached at and it just turned me off anyway. Now if someone wants to know more about my beliefs I don't mind answering them but like you said that should not be on the group but through email or something. Again Great Post! |

I totally agree with you about religious tolerance, Kelly. You have known me long enough to know my feelings about religious tolerence. To me, being a "true" Christian is not judging others b/c that's God's job & personally, I wouldn't want that job. Life is stessful enough for me as it is. (LOL) In the past, I have done my own personal study of different religions b/c instead of being afaird of ppl's difference, I decided to educate myself. I do ask questions. Sometimes to the point of driving ppl crazy, but if you don't ask the questions, how will you learn? BTW, I feel that way about life in general NOT just about different religions. Of course, that is also what I love about homeschooling. To be, it's about finding the answers to the questions instead of only asking the "right" questions to make others feel confortable. Okay, I will get off the soapbox now. (LOL) |

Excellent post, thanks. I agree with all of you ladies. I am always interested in different religions and beliefs. I have always felt that each person must follow what’s in their own hearts. |
