Ok so i have a question, now it may seem stupid to some so bear with me a minute...
I am 32 weeks pregnant now, i had my first 2 children at 33 and 34 weeks, and that was in Dothan AL, i am currently living in murfreesboro TN. Now with my first 2 kids the Docs and whomever went by a 36 week gestation period (with the begining of the 8 month a ok time to give birth because the lungs were supposed to develope all the way in the end of the 7th month), which meant my kids were only 2-3 weeks early, now with my third pregnancy i have noticed the gestation period is 40 weeks and that if i have my kid around the same time as the first 2 that she will be 6-7 weeks early (and now hearing that the lungs don't develope until the end of the 8th month)
Leaving my question... when the hell did the gestation time period change? or was it just some fluke that AL went by? |

IThe gestation period hasis been always 40 weeks. The lungs develop early but the nervous system develops until the end so going up to the due date dimished the possiility of having any kind of problem. Even if the lungs are ok does not mean that the rest is!

The gestation period is 40 weeks when you go by the moment of conception. I had my daughter at 38 weeks. But by 35 weeks : (www.verybestbaby.com ) The central nervous system will continue to mature. The lungs will most likely be fully developed by Week 35. Baby is beginning to develop daily activity cycles. You may notice that Baby is often more active at night when you're trying to rest! Even thought they won't be considered “full-term” until the end of the 40th week, Baby's respiratory and digestive systems are nearly mature. Baby's immune system is starting to develop. The umbilical cord is now about 20 inches long and one to two centimeters in diameter; at birth, it will be about two feet long and a half-inch thick.
If you have your child around 35 weeks your babys lungs should be find, with the biggest worry being the babys immune system. But different doc. in different states have different opions, just make sure you take up any and ALL concerns (wither you think them to be "stupid" or not) and i found the website i listed above to be very helpful. You can see week to week what is devopling with the baby. Hope this info was at least a little helpful. |

Hi Jennifer, I had twin boys at 36 weeks 3 days gestation and my boys are fine. Because I made it to 36 weeks gestation, my pregnancy was considered to be full term. My son Michael was born a blue baby (just means not able to breath on his own) but when he started breathing he was just fine. They are 2 2/3 years old and you would never be able to tell that Michael had a little difficulty when he was born.
I went to a Marvelous Multiples class when I was 24 weeks pregnant with my boys and found out from a nurse that had twins herself (she also worked in the NIC-U and the regular nursaries) that singletons lungs usually develop around the 36th week. Twins lungs develop earlier because of such limited space (God does work in misterious ways, doesn't he?) usually around 34 to 35 weeks.
The gestation period for a singleton is (standard) 40 weeks but if you are able to make it to around 37 or 38 weeks, your baby will be just fine. I have seen, with my very own eyes, a baby born at 26 weeks gestation and made it just fine. She is now a very healthy girl with loads of energy and such vigor!!!
I hope all is well with you and the baby. :)
Take care, Jeanne BTW, what did you have, boy or girl? |
