My daughter has decided that 2 or 3 in the morning is a good time to get up and nurse and rather than go back to sleep, she thinks it is playtime! I do not want her to continue that behavior and both times, I have laid her in her crib in the other room, let her play, and let her cry herself back to sleep. She is 4 months old now and she used to do really well about going right back to sleep but now...she thinks she needs to play. Any other suggestions on how to get her to stop that behavior? She has not had an odd schedule for either of those two days and did not take late naps either day so I am certain it is not that she is sleeping too much during the day or too late in the evening...I don't know! |

Where are you feeding your daughter? When she wakes up for feeding try feeding her in her bedroom with the lights still off . If you have a rocker sit there to feed her so that she doesn't think that you are taking her out of the room to play. Be patient it will get better. I have an 11 month old and I went through the same thing when she was about the same age. Hang in there. |

She usually starts the night in her bassinette in our room so when I feed her, it is in our bed with the lights still off. When she finishes, I put her back down in our room and she stays asleep for maybe 10 min (just enough time for me to be on the verge of going back to sleep). Then she wakes up and I generally try nursing again just thinking that she didn't get enough and fell asleep but she usually will nurse for a minute or two then be uninterested. I keep the lights off in her room when I lay her down to let her play/fall back asleep too. There is no music or anything else stimulating except a lite colored mobile over her crib. She did it again last night too and she only cried for about 2 minutes before she went back to sleep too...it is getting better...maybe! |

I totaaly have been there Kendra. Have you tried putting in a humidifier or noise machine for white noise? I was getting up almost every two hours with my baby girl and finally got too tired to function. I knew we needed some change. So I started a bedtime routine and put a humidifier in her room with her for white noise. I also was nursing her to sleep which can sometimes be the main cause of this problem. Are you nursing her to sleep? If so, try feeding her before your bedtime routine and put her down awake in her bassinet or crib. There is a Dr, Ferber way to have them cry it out. you let them cry for three minutes alone and then three with you there. Don't pick her up out ofthe crib/bassinet and continue to leave her and come back for reassurance. As time days go on you may the time longer between going back and within a week you should have a sleeping through the night baby. I tried this and it worked very well for us. It was VERY hard at first for me, but in the end it was best for her. Sometimes she still wakes to nurse at 3am and will for a half hour and then go back to sleep for another four. Your daughter is only 4 months though. She may be having a growth spurt. I started this Dr. Ferber method at 5 months, but everyone is different. It really depends on what you and your baby are comfortable with. Hope I was of some help. Keep us posted! Caity |
