Spoon feeding
We just started trying to teach our daughter to eat cereal and I know that it can take a while to get them really proficient at eating from a spoon. It is so different from breast and bottle feeding. I wanted to know how long any of you have seen that it has taken your little ones to get it down or if there are any tricks out there that I do not know about. I usually start feeding her the cereal when she is only half hungry so that she does not get too agitated from being really hungry (she tends to want food NOW when she is hungry so I thought that would not be the best time to do it!) Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You are right- being too hungry would make her get frustrated more easily. I was told to touch the spoon to my son's lips for a few seconds and after trying that he would suck the cereal from the spoon. In order for this to work the cereal has to be pretty runny. But it should be anyway, at first. It took my son a few days of trying once or twice a day to get it. Some kids take a lot longer. She is probably still pushing with her tongue, but that will stop soon. Good luck and just try to be patient. Remember that cereal is not a source of her nutrition yet, you shouldn't reduce the amount of formula or breastmilk she gets until she really gets the hang of eating the cereal.

Spoon feeding is really easy I promise. You just have to learn what your child does. My son is 4 months and eats from a spoon great. The first time he didn't know what to do but has we kept doing it he became a pro. Just remember to push their tongues down with the spoon. Other wise its all going to come out. And really just have patients! Good luck! Oh yeah and its a great idea to start feeding them some before giving them the cereal but I would lessen it everyday that way they learn!

We started it just on Friday but then we weren't able to do it all weekend because she was sick, running a fever and everything so she was pretty lethargic and all she wanted was to nurse and sleep. Even nursing wasn't too successful! Today is only the second time I have tried doing it and she did eat SOME but I think she was tired so she wanted to nurse and nap. That was almost 2 hours ago and she is still napping! I am sure she will get it eventually but I wanted to know if there were any tricks that really helped! BTW, she is just over 4 months old. Thanks...and if anyone else has any ideas, I would love to hear them!
