Hello Ladies, My son has been breastfed since birth and I am having a really hard time weaning him. I'm not up for the cry out method. He vomits everytime he cries. He has never used a pacifier, but I'm told that is a good way to start to get him to take something other than the breast at night when he wakes up. I've tried several brands but he hates them and won't take them. Has anyone found a brand that is shaped like real nipple? Nothing I've found seems to have a natural shape or texture at all. The Dr. says to hold a pacifier next to my breast, try dipping it in breast milk etc. but it hasn't worked. I've been trying to wean for 3 months. He is 15 months old. He takes sippy cups during the day, but still wants to breast to go down for naps, nighttime bed time and all-night snacks. I've tried bottles, sippy cups etc. in bed, but he screams, scratches at me and then vomits from crying. |

My 3-month-old is strictly breastfed as well. I had to get her onto bottled breastmilk when I went back to work though. We've had success with Nuk nipples on the bottles and the Nuk pacifiers. The regular pacifiers make her gag, but once we got the right size in the Nuk, she's been fine. |

Sounds like you have a handful there. I feel your pain about the CIO method. My daughter wants to nurse in the middle of the night all the time which is fine for now because she is so young, but anyway yes, I have foundd a paci that works for her. I think it was made by NUBI. The paci is an ortho one. It helps starighten the teeth as they come in. They are actually very close to a nipple, long and then round at the end. you shuold check out a rite aid or babies r us. Any ortho should work. Hope it works out! Caity |

Hi, sorry your having such a hard time. I breastfeed as well and she refused the first kind of pacifier we offered. She wanted nothing to do with it. She loves the MAM ones. I buy them from Target or Walmart. Now we can't make it through the night without them! My cousin couldn't get their little girl to take pacifiers at all so when she wanted to offer her something other then breast, she had to offer her a cup which she likes to drink out of..some babies just won't take 'em! Maybe offer him the sippy cups in a different room before you put him in bed? I hope you find something that works! |

Hi there, My 7 m/o takes Mam also. I tried giving her a diff brand once (my mom gave us a cute one with a basketball shaped face) with a different shaped nipple and she started gagging. The nice thing about the Mam ones is that you can't put them in upside down. they are the same shape whether upside down, or right side up (easier in the middle of the night, that's for sure). |

Thank you so much for the advice. I bought all of the recommended brands today. We'll see how it goes. |

I breastfed as well, I can imagine it hasn't been easy to wean...I'm not sure what sippy cup you're using but if you haven't tried the soft rubber tip cups then maybe that could help if the pacifiers don't work. I had to go throught lots of pacifiers also..he eventually liked latex ones. Once he started eating solids, juices, got interested in other foods, etc he was easy to wean also. It takes time, sometimes you're ready but they're not....just like so many other stages! |

Thanks so much everyone. I still haven't been able to get him to take the new brands I've tried. I guess he just figures he'll hold out for the real thing. |
