Stranger anxiety

I was just wondering if anyone on here has had any issues with their children and stranger anxiety? My son is 22 months old and he has recently developed this problem. Everytime we go anywhere such as birthday parties, or even just friends houses and there are men there that he doesn't know, he starts freaking out, crying and it even got to the point that he hit me in the face, and he's never hit before at all! The first couple times he did it I was getting frustrated with him and disciplining him for it, but then I read up on it and it says online to comfort the children to make them feel safe. Has anyone else gone through this and do you have any ideas of what will help him get through it?
