Introducing Solids
At what time are you introducing solids. My daughter in 6 mo. old now and her doctor advisef that she start her solids. I started, but I only give one a day and breastfeed along with the daily serving of cereal (mixed with breast milk). I just wanted to know if anyone else has or is planning to start solids as well at this age or if I should wait.
Thanks so much,
Caity

To be honest, I always waited. I watched for their cues of readiness. Most of my children were close to a year before they had solids. They always began with avocados, bananas, and sweet potatos. I never did cereal and I used regular food not jars. Thats what worked for us. Hope this helps.

I think it is best to watch their cues. My daughter is 8 1/2 months old now, but we started feeding her solids at 4 1/2 months. In the beginning I was dead set on waiting til she was at least 6 months old. But by 3 1/2 to 4 months, she was reaching for food off our plates and watching us eat. She was also able to sit up (with assistance). So at 4 1/2 months I started rice cereal mixed with breastmilk. She really didn't like it. So I tried oatmeal cereal mixed with breastmilk. She liked that better. Then I started Gerber food (vegetables) when she was about 6 months old. I don't think she had Gerber fruits until she was 7 months or 7 1/2 months old. I was planning on making my own baby food for her, but that just didn't work out for us. It was best for us to use the Gerber foods.

I also believe you should watch for her cues. Such as
her watching you eat, following your fork as it moves from plate to mouth, reaching for food on your plate, mimicks your eating behaviors, such as opening her mouth wide when you open your mouth to eat. My philosophy is always offer, but don't force. It may take awhile. At first it is just fun for them to receive the textures and tastes. I began to introduce solids to my daughter at 8 months, but she had like 4 teeth already so I thought she should be using them. =) Good luck

Dr. Sears and Dr. Gordon both advise that a child be at least 6 mo. old. This is because the swallow reflex just isn't developed yet before then.

My son was reaching for food at 5 mo. But I waited until 6 mo. And even then he wasn't ready and didn't really want to eat solids. He really didn't get "into" it until almost 8 mo. He never really liked baby food, so I started him on table food at 9 mo. and that is what finally got him really eating. He was a late teether (11 1/2 mo. first tooth) so he learned to chew everything with his gums. Plus I mashed stuff with my fingers or cut stuff up really really small. I encouraged him to feed himself very early. This is good for their motor skills and for developing their pincer grasp.

You're doing great. Follow your gut. Breastmilk is best.

I agree with a lot of what Elena had to say, and we followed Dr. Sears' advice and waited until Anthony was 6 months old before giving him cereal mixed with breastmilk as well. I think 6 months is perfect for starting out! :)
