My son would not sleep in his crib, bassinet, no place except my arms. My advice would be to let him cry for a couple of minutes and see what happens. I never did that, I felt too bad, and I am really sorry now. My son is 20 months old and still does not fall asleep on his own. I think I have conditioned him to use myself or my husband to sleep.
I would also try to put him down when he is still awake and tired. That way he may learn to fall asleep on his own.
Good luck! Trust me though, you will want to solve this issue before he gets older.
As for the constipation problems, I would speak with your pediatrician.

We use Mylicon drops with our little girl to help with her gas. If he is breastfed, he shouldn't be constipated. I actually made an emergency visit to our doctor becuase I thought she was constipated and it turns out she has acid reflux and now takes Zantac, so you might want to have the doctor check it out. All newborn babies interpret any sort of pain/distress as gas so it's hard to tell if that's really what it is. Plus, read Elizabeth Pantley's "No Cry Sleep Solutions" book. I reccommended it to someone else in this group too. It will help you figure out how to get him to sleep on his own. I'm still trying to do it myself, and it's hard to follow the suggestions when you are SO TIRED, but I'm trying and it's worth a shot for you too. Good luck!

I also had a similar problem with my son when he was about 2 months old. He had constipation and gas bubbles in his tummy. He strained every time he needed to make a bowl movement. Anyway, I told my doctor about it and she said that it's nothing to worry about that his body is just trying to work it out and it will on it's own. Couple days went by and the problem was still there. My family kept telling me about Mylacon and that it really works and is a natural application. I went ahead and bought some and gave it to him. He was pooping and tooting by the end of the day. I also gave him 2oz of applejuice with 4 oz of water per the advise nurse. She also said I could give him prune juice deluted with water which helped as well. Being a first time mommy I couldn't bare to see him in pain any longer so I went ahead and used my best judgment and to this day he is fine.
