Parents of Toddlers

Hi everyone! I'm new
Just wanted to say a quick hello to everyone and i also had a quick question for you all. I was just wondering when you think it is appropriate to stop using baby or free and clear laundry detergent and just use the normal stuff you wash your own clothes in. It gets costly sometimes buying 2 and 3 different kinds of laundry and I'm always looking for ways to make life with a toddler easier! Thanks everyone and have a pleasant day!

I stopped using the baby soap around a year and use tide, which is great.

Hi Heather. I'm new to this group too. I would recommend using Tide or Wisk providing your child does not have sensitive skin. You should have no problems making the switch. Try washing a load in Tide or your normal detergent. If the child does not break out in dry red patches, or a rash. You are good:)

all of the major brands have a fragrance or dye free products. that's what i do just to limit the amount of chemicals in the house.

I know that this sounds silly but I stopped using the other stuff when my son was about 6 months old because 7-10yrs ago they did not have all of this seperate stuff to wash in and I sometimes feel it is all a ploy to just have to spend more money (or make us feel like horrible moms if we do not use it)

My daughter was plauged with eczema when she was born, and we managed to cure her of it...except for 1 spot. So skin was a hot issue at the doc. When she hit one I asked the exact same question and the doc told me to try a shirt in Tide and I did and she had no other reactions. I had to use the sensitive stuff until then, but I bought the All free and clear and washed all of our clothing in it. I was glad when I switched to tide. I guess I am weird I don't think the clothes are clean unless they smell fresh!!!!!

Vanessa, how and what did you use to clear the Excema, my girlfriends daughter has excema, and is having a difficult time clearing it up!

i hear where you're coming from, vanessa. thats why i dont like the free end clear detergent cuz her clothes dont smell pretty! i actually just recently bought the new tide with baking soda in it (the white lilac scent) and i love it! i've been washing all of our clothes in that and it smells sooo good and your clothes feel so crisp and clean. my daughter has little red bumps on the tops of her legs. could this be eczema? the detergent has not seemed to irritate her skin any though, so thats good!

Charise we used a two step process recommended by the pediatrician. First after a warm bath we blotted her skin dry(kind of leaving it damp). Then I applied a Avenno lotion for babies. Then once it was dry we would apply a thick layer of Aquaphor over the lotion to seal it in. Immediately after that we put her in a pair of pajamas with feet and long sleeves. I did this twice per day(evening and afternoon), with the exception of the bath which I was told to limit to once daily for no more than 5 minutes. When she was about 1 year of age she had one spot left on her knee I was told at that age it was fine to apply some hydrocortisone ointment to the spot. In 2 weeks it was gone. I still lotion with baby CREAM daily and still limit the bath time especially in the winter. But it is gone! Another suggestion was to put a humidifier in her room, but my husband has very bad allergies and those make him ill. He is allergic to the mold that those things inevitably grow. instead of the aquaphor you can use Vaseline, but I found the aquaphor was much better---it stays stable when mixed with the lotion. Good luck to your friend I know how bad it can be to see your little one covered in red spots.
