My son doesn't sleep thru night anymore...
In the last week my 7 month old son has been waking up in the night. He started sleeping thru the night at about 3 months. I change his diaper, then I give him a bottle, but he doesn't want it, so I try and rock him back to sleep. Once he falls asleep, I lay him down in his crib. The instant he "hits" the mattress, he wakes up screaming/crying. So I try again, and again, and again, and he will NOT stay in his crib. So I bring him in to our bed. He still cries! Eventually he will fall asleep, but I have to be holding him. The past 2 nights he had a very low-grade fever so I took him to the doctor. There was nothing wrong with him (ears weren't red; glands not swollen). I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas? or advice? Also, he takes naps during the day, and has no problems sleeping in his crib then. Thanks in advance! Angela

He may be teething, that could explain the low fever. Do you have a night light for his room? I have to keep a dim light on for my daughter it seems to help.

Yeah, he has a nightlight in his room. The doctor said that his gums weren't swollen or red so he didn't think that his teeth were bothering him. I don't know...

So far the only time I noticed my daughters gums swollen from teething has been the molars.

I had the same problem, but its so nice to say I haven't had that problem for a whole 2 nights in a row. My 6 month old son was waking up SCREAMING bloody murder.. so I would nurse him, and he would fall back to sleep, but waking up 2-5 times a night. Long story short- I got one of those bears with the heartbeats inside it and it seemed to put him at ease a little more. He has woken up 2 times around 10:30 and 11:45pm but, he just falls back to sleep. He whines a bit, and lets me know he's awake, but I ignore him and roll back over and fall asleep. The only problem with the bear was that it turned off after 40 minutes. Sooo- I went to http://www.walmart.com and I found a natures lullaby player that had the heartbeat sound on it also. It plays soft soothing music as well as other things too. It is sound activated or plays continuously. I dont know if this will help, but if you are willing to spend $20, it could. I also just had to let him cry it out a few nights in a row, and it helped. He slept 2 nights in a row, and its the best sleep I've gotten in a long time. I hope this can help you.

Shenae,

I do have the nature's lullaby player, but it doesn't work for him. He'll listen to it for a little while, but then he'll start crying again. Good advice, though! I've also tried letting him cry it out, but he'll cry so hard he starts to gag! So then I feel bad and I go and get him.

Hi Angela,
I'm sorry to hear that the poor little guy is having such trouble. How many naps does he take throughout the day? I was giving my 6 month old 3 naps and my Dr. told me to cut out the 3rd nap, which was at 5pm or 6, and to try that. Ever since I started doing so, he has slept thru the night.. I'm not sure if that was the trick or not, but I seem to think it was. Does he have gas? Mylicon did wonders for Levi when he was small. I hope you get something figured out soon. I know exactly how you are feeling, though. My little guy just started sleeping through the night the past 3 nights, and I am still crossing my fingers every night that it works..
Best of luck!!!!

I never thought about tyring the gas drops. I'll try that tonight and pray it works! I hope your little guy continues sleeping thru for you :)

Also, if this doesn't work..which I'm praying that it does for you.. another suggestion would be to get his ears checked. I know that people have told me that sometimes if you change the way they are laying it can affect their ears if they are infected.. Not sure if you have had this done or not, but if the drops dont help (I'm still praying it does) this might be a solution also

Well, I took him to the doctor on Thursday and the doc said he was fine; no ear infection, glands weren't swollen. Last night he fell asleep before I had a chance to give him the drops, and guess what? He slept all night until 8 am! But I didn't sleep b/c I was waiting for him to wake up :( Oh, well. At least he slept! Yeah! Did your little one sleep for you?

Yes, Levi slept all night. 4 nights in a row. I'm just hoping that it continues. He did wake up at 5am, but thats fine with me. He came to bed with me at 5am because I fed him and then we got back up at 7am. So it wasn't bad. It might be a bad habit to bring him in bed with me in the early morning, but when he is 10 years old he's not going to want to cuddle anymore, so I'm going to take advantage of it as best as I can.. at least he is sleeping in his own bed thru the night. I'm super glad that he slept for you though! Maybe he knows that we're talking about him! Ha.. Best of luck to you tonight, and keep me posted on how he does.

My son was doing that to. I asked the Doctor. Honestly he told me that kids at this time go through a psychlogical change in there brain and they are starting to push boundries. My son was waking up at 2 and then 5. He was put to bed at 9. So the doctor told me that at the time of 2 a.m. to ignore him and that he will learn to self sooth. It has worked. But he said he wasn't sure about the 5 because that was a full 8 hours and that he was hungary. So i feed him at 5 and he usually is asleep in a hour and sleeps for another 4 hours. So try it. Thats how i got him to sleep through the night and now he atleast sleeps the 8 hours and then sleeps another 4. Plus he still naps.

I didn't read through any of the other posts, so I'm sorry if this is repeat for you...

teething is a major sleep disturbant

new muscle movement...such as crawling, pulling up, walking, etc...can really disturb sleep

no ear infection, huh?

Anything changed with you or your household routine?
Maybe he's feeling distant from you and needs some reassurance?

Dreaming could be starting to distrupt him too

Gas? Tummy aches?

hang in there...and my suggestion would be to have faith that he'll fall back asleep if left alone after some reassuring words, a nightlight, and/or some soft music from a toy or mobile...I bet if you stay consistent with keeping him in the crib, he'll move on..or whatever is bothering him will pass.
Wouldn't it be nice if they could turn a certain color that you could look up in a book to see what was wrong? :0)

AAaahhhh!!!! I'm ready to pull my hair out. My 9 month old son has been waking up ALL NIGHT, EVERY NIGHT for 2 weeks or so now.... He is fine during his naps so it isn't his ear (had it checked anyways) it could be teeth but for this long??!!! He wakes up about an hour after I put him down and then about every hour or two all night until he's bright eyed and bushy tailed at 5 am. I'm at wits end. If he doesn't go back to sleep on his own, I rub his back and he goes back to sleep one or two times but, I can't keep getting up so I bring him into our bed and he still wakes up all night.
