How often do you let your teenager chat with his friends online? My son has an AIM page and Facebook and wants to chat with his friends as soon as he gets home, and most of the night. I hate trying to watch him constantly, since he does have a laptop in his room for schoolwork. His Chemistry teacher has them do all their homework online, so he does need to log on for that, and there is a lot of homework because it is Honors chemistry. But, I want to put restrictions on the time he spends chatting, since he has been staying up too late. I am curious what other parents do, I am not sure what is reasonable. |

My teens are limited simply because *I* am on the computer SO MUCH!
Rachel chats on Zwinky and Daniel "talks" to others as he plays Runescape.
Daniel (16) doesn't have a bedtime (we homeschool) so he can be on it as much as he wants during the night as long as he be ready for school at 10am the next morning. Rachel (11) has an 11:00pm bedtime. A lot of times Daniel will let Rachel use the computer until her bedtime, and then he will use it.
Our computer is in a heavily trafficed area of our home; and both know that I pick odd times just to come see what they are doing in detail. |

Sorry, our teens use the computer as a research tool and for other interests but never talk to others online. Since I work in Public Safety they are all to aware of the dangers and aren't interested in it.
Another thought, "If you can't say it in person or on the phone you probably shouldn't be saying it." |

I have no problem with my son chatting on line, I understand technology and the need for their generation to communicate like this... geez, look at us :) It is the way they are growing up. My son communicates with people that he can not see, they live in other states (friends he met in summer camp), or kids from his old school (that are an hour away now). I would hate for him to talk long distance on the phone. I think it is awesome that they have these Facebook sites for the kids to all chat together. I know I would be doing it if I was his age. My husband works in Law Enforcement so we are very aware of the dangers and so is my son. So I am not worried at all about that. Plus, we constantly monitor his account. I am just not sure how much is too much. Should I not worry if he is getting good grades in school and doing all his homework? |

When his friends stay over, they get on the computer and chat. He uses the computer for homework too. He is allowed one hour on the computer whenenver each day during the week, except on Saturdays. No computer for anyone on Sundays. |
