If I hadn't taken my son out of public school at age 12, he might've ended up being a shooter, too. Bullied, teased, threatened, and accused of things he didn't do. The administration did nothing despite his repeated reports to them of the abuse from the other students (he was relatively new and this is one of those cliquish small towns that don't welcome outsiders easily).
On the evening of his last day of school, Daniel came to me and said he was going to take his pocket knives to school for protection the next day. I said "No" and he broke down and told me everything: constant teasing (the mean kind); he had the attention of every bully in school, it seemed; accused of doing something that got the whole athletic team in trouble, and persecuted because of that; now he was in genuine fear for his life. Now, I don't know that those middle schoolers would have followed through on a threat to kill him - but he thought they would. The next day, I unenrolled him and began homeschooling him.
The boy in this article had been homeschooled for about a year, I think. This incident shows how long-lasting the effects of trauma (bullying) really are. What do we need to do to protect our children? |
