Hi again neighbor, Are the PA laws very strict for homeschoolers? I have some time, but I would like to homeschool my daughter. I have so many reasons for wanting to do it. Everytime I read our local paper there is always something bad going on in the public schools. Thanks :-) |

Hey Jackie - You can check out the legal requirements for homeschooling in your state at the Home School Legal Defense Association at (I think) www.hslda.org (or com).
Oklahoma, where I am, is one of the easiest places to homeschool. If I had to jump through some of the hoops that residents of other states have to, I don't know if I could handle it. |

Thanks, I will check that out. Crystal had sent me a message that her family had run into a lot of strict stuff about homeschooling in PA. I have been thrying to find out if it is by school district or state wide. |

Hi Jodi, very nice to meet you!
Jackie, PA. is very strict with Homeschooling, in that we have to provide so much paper work every June, and then have an Affidavit notorized & turned in to the district by August 1st of every year. This is our 5th year, but i must admit, I get very nervous every June & August, until I receive the letter of success (for every school yr) from the school district. |

Wow! I don't know if I could handle that much pressure! I might endure it, though, for the sake of my kids if the PA public schools are anything like the ones here. |

Could it be just some areas of PA? We live close to the Warren PA border (Erie) and have heard it wasn't difficult there. In fact PA gives parents money for teaching home, I think I was told up to $1800.00 per child.??? |

The quality of the schools usually is local - it depends a lot on the staff that work with the kids. |

Thanks all for the nice welcome. I guess all school districts in PA. try to add their own requirements for HS families, but our Evaluator said the schools aren't allowed to do this, becasue they have to follow the same Law we as parents have to follow. Yet, our school district does try to set their own requirements. Some families grant their wishes, and some stick with the State Laws.
Pennsylvania State requires all HS families to have their children's portfolio's evaluated by a licensed Teacher, and then submit the ports and evaluators letter of improvement, to the school district, by June 30th. Then we have to make a list of learning objectives for the new school year, and have an Affidavit notorized. They need to be on the school superintendants desk by Aug 1st. It's a lot of paper work, and I'm so happy when it's all completed. I never breathe a sigh of relief until I receive the letter of success from the district.
I've heard that NJ is a nice State to Live in and HomeSchool. |

Whoop's, I forgot to say, I haven't heard that PA. give parents money towards HomeSchooling. I wonder if this is for Cyber School? I have heard that they provide computers and printers for the home. |

That’s a lot of paper work, but I am not discouraged. I think all the extra work would be well worth it. I know that my future hubby’s aunt is a teacher in PA so maybe I could get a little help from her. Parts of NJ are nice. I grew up there near the Newark area. (not so nice) |
