congested
I am a new mother of a 6wk old boy Adam. At night he is very congested and has a difficult time breathing. I find this very upsetting. Has anybody else experienced this, and if so what did you do? I am doing the Baby Ayr nose drops, and am using a vaporizor. Any other suggestions?

Before he goes down at night, sit with him in the bathroom while you have the shower turned as hot as it will go to produce steam. Sit in there for about 10 - 15 minutes. This will help to reduce swelling of his nasal passages and should help him to breathe easier. Also, I sometimes have had to let her sleep in their car seat in their room to keep them upright. This also helps. But with your being so young, I would call your doctor to make sure this is okay. My daughter is a little older. Good luck!

My daughter always had more congestion from the vaporizer. Like the post before says the steam from the shower works well and having the baby sleep in a car seat or bouncie seat helps too.

My 6 week old was also experiencing what I thought was serious congestion starting at two weeks. Though his seemed to be all day long, it did get worse at night. I too was upset by this as it seemed to interfere with him being able to breathe while breastfeeding as well. It ended up that he did have a cold, I guess my 5yo step-daughter who started kindergarten passed it along to him, but when the other cold symptoms passed, the "congestion" stayed. When I took him back to the doctor for his 1 month well check I told the doc about my concerns with the congestion. She informed me that newborns can not breathe out of their mouths and therefore sometimes sound like "little piggies" and sound congested. She said it isn't until they are 4-6 months that they can breathe out of their mouths and noses. So to compensate they make extra mucous in their noses to make sure that they stay clear of infections and what not so they can continue to breathe. Weird, huh? I took her word for it and have tried not to worry about it. He still seems like he gets a lil stuffy, i just keep my "boogie sucker" and Baby Ayr handy when it seems to be really bad. Hope this helps ease your mind a little.

Here you go!

From TLC Pediatrics, online:

"Babies breathe through their noses more than their mouths. They will often sneeze or sound like they are congested. Unless you are seeing a lot of mucous, you should not do anything. If needed, you can use 2-3 saline drops and the bulb syringe to help loosen mucous. If you are concerned that the baby is having trouble breathing, please see your doctor and have the baby checked."

** I also read that the only time newborn breathe through their mouths is when they are crying.

When my son was congested our doctor suggested Little Noses before bed and a cool mist humidifier. Or you can make your own by using 1/2 tsp of salt to 8oz of water, this is what they use to make saline drops that are sold in stores. (our doctor gave us this recipe) You do not need to use a bulb syringe your baby should either sneeze or the saline will loosen the mucus enough to swallow or come out on its own. I don't recommend using the bulb syringe because when I used it on my son he would hold his breath for a long period of time.

When my son was that age that happened to me. I got Johnson and Johnsons baby vicks baby wash, and used that with my son every night before bed, and that seemed to help. Also, i got a Vicks Vaporizer where you just take these little tabs of Vicks and put them in this little machine (no water involved) and that did wonders. Hope this helps!!

My little girl is congested very much right now and I use vicks vapor rub for babies on her chest and it seems to be working. Also, I use the pediacare plug in vapors and right now she is sleeping better than she has a week long.

Thank you for all of your replies. I really appreciate it. I will try all of your suggestions. I did try having him sleep in a bouncy seet, elevated, that did not seem to work. And I'm not so sure the vaporizor is working either. It is nice to know that this is common, and appears is not something that is life threatening. I found it very interesting to know that children don't breath out of their mouths, and create extra mucus to ward off infection. Only it creates difficulties breathing.
Thanks again
