Halloween costumes
Does anyone make Halloween costumes for their children? They are so expensive to buy, plus I think home made is a lot more fun.

I think I am going to make a Jack-In-The-Box costume for my son-- his name is Jack! I have an idea of how to make the box part, but I don't want to put make up on him, so I'm not sure how to dress him. Any suggestions?

Do you know what your children are going to dress up as for Halloween?

He wouldn't need makeup if you make a jester looking hat w a bell on the ends for him to wear. Use similar colors as the box. When I think of a jack in the box, I think red and green for some reason. That is such a cute idea!

Thanks. Yes, red and green seem appropriate, also maybe yellow. Making the hat may be a challenge for me, but I am going to give it a try.

I haven't figured out what they are dressing up as, but I do know that we are buying the costumes, I can't even sew on Girl scout badges so I definitaly won't be making any costume. I think the jack in the box sounds really neat though, have you thought about doing the red circles on the cheeks, kinda like in chittychittybangbang. Just and Idea

This year (and last year) I got my daughter's costume at a gently used clothing store for kids called Once Upon A Child. I have paid under $10 for costumes that would be around $30 if I bought them new. You could go to their website ouac.com and click on the store locator link to see if there is a store near you.

You don't necessarily have to sew to make a costume. My sister was a skunk one year, and all she did was dress in black and use a black and white feather boa- a fake one, less expensive, for the tail. She used a piece of wire to shape it, and hair paint to put a white stripe in her dark hair. No sewing required! I also had a friend who went as a bunch of grapes by wearing purple and pinning small purple balloons all over her shirt. Look on Martha Stewart's website, she has some great ideas, and many use things you already have, so you don't have to buy much.
