My mom has suggested that I put a little bit of cereal in my sons last bottle before bed to get him to sleep longer. I know that's what the did when I was a baby but I'm not sure if that what I should do now. Are mom's still doing this?

That is a huge can of worms. Some recent articles say this can be a choking hazard. Check out this website I found about the subject: http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/solids-sleep.html

It can also lead to overfeeding, so I would be careful with this. Not all babies sleep through the night, so don't expect that your son should be by a certain age. If he is up often and you are having trouble getting any sleep at all, talk with his pediatrician about alternatives. Also, I have an article that has tips to help you move toward better sleep at night, if you'd like to check it out. http://www.helium.com/tm/250628/having-means-losing-sleep
Hope this helps

Alishia, I get a newsletter/magazine from Enfamil every month and this topic was part of a quiz - they said don't do it. It is dangerous to feed babies any type of solid food right before bed due to spitting up and choking. I assume because of your son's age that he isn't even on cereal yet at all, making this even more of a bad idea. This may have worked for some moms in the past, but new research tells us that it's old fashioned and just not a good idea. Your baby will sleep longer when he is ready. |

We had to put ceral in my sons bottle all the time, because he had severe reflux and he was fine, however I would not suggest it just to make him sleep longer, because it really doesn't help. I dont think it will make he choke though, we gave the ceral to my son to help stop the spitting up and it worked. |

Most people give a big no to this one....but, I did it with my son. The dr. wasn't thrilled about it, but my son was still hungry after his last feeding and he was too young to start solids. Our dr. didn't want us to increase his formula because he'd be getting too much of it. I know lots of moms who also did it. We would make an 8 oz. bottle at night and put in one scoop of cereal in it. We cut the nipple just slightly and everything was fine. |

I do it with my son because of mild reflux. The Dr. prescribed it, there's no risk to it, but if you don't feel sure then ask your Dr. or don't do it, follow your motherly instinct.

Thanks everyone for your great advice. He is sleeping about 4-6 hours and he's only 7 weeks old, but I'm going back to work on Monday so my mom suggested cereal but I had my reservations, I'm thinking he's just fine but my mom can be kind of pushy about these things. I'll talk to his doctor at our next appointment. Thanks for all the articals too! |

Hi Alishia,
My mom had also suggested that I put a bit of rice cereal into my son's nightly bottle to help him sleep longer. I first tried it when he was about 10 or 11 weeks old. To my surprise it actually had the opposite effect - he slept less! I didn't get it. Even she was stumped. So she suggested that I gradually increase the amount of cereal. However, it still resulted with the same. Only once did he sleep 8 hours, but he didn't poop the next day which is something to watch for if you decide to add cereal. I guess it can bind babies up a bit. I stopped putting cereal in his bottle now and he is naturally beginning to sleep longer between his feedings. Although I don't think anything is really wrong with adding a little cereal (my mother did it with me and I'm still here), do what you feel is best for your son and try not to let your mom be too much of an influence on your decisions. Good luck! |

It really depends on the baby and if you think their tummies are ready for cereal. We gave our daughter cereal in her bottle at night when she was 10 weeks old and she did fine. It can do different things to different babies. Sometimes it will make them sleep longer with some it will make them sleep less because their tummies just can't handle the cereal and they get a tummy ache and thats what wakes them up. Try it once, if it has the opposite effect of what you want then don't do it. My philosophy is try it once if it works, keep doing it, if it doesn't then stop and try something else. Take what your mom says with a grain of salt, she is just trying to help but something moms can be pushy and annoying and not realize it. Let us know what you decided to do. |
