We always say that we are a family of six because we are 2 parents, 2 kids, and two baby cats (there are no baby anymore but we still call them babies). We decided on adopting cats because I wanted to teach my children limits. A cat you can not bother him forever and you have to respect his space...I thought it would be good for them to learn it. However, the cats have a really different behavior with the kids and they are a lot more tolerant with them. Everynight they jump on their bed to say goodnight.

We adopted a cat only a month ago. I grew up with a cat in the house and I like that they are independant. My 2 year old worried me a little when I first brought the cat home because he is very wild and was always jumping all over him but he has calmed down a lot. I was worried the cat would hurt him because you know how they will not tolerate being harrased for long. I was surprised at actualy how much he does put up with from my son, poor cat! |

as a child my family have always had cats. my family moved around alot with my parents work, so cats were easier to move with. i remember once when i was about 9, we stayed with my great aunt. she had a old farm house with a barn. in the barn, she had anywhere from 50-70 cats depending the time of year. {spring was when she had the most} most were just migrating thru, some stayed year round. i loved seeing all those cats! it was one of my best times as a child! so now, i've tried to make sure my children have the same respect for animals.we have 3 cats right now. i've found that cats seem to be very good around kids. they put up with alot. but never too much. we even had a cat named zoie when my son jake was born that would sleep next to his crib {never in it } and would come get us when jake would wake from his nap. god i miss her! she'd sit on the toilet when the kids took a bath, sit and "play" with them on the floor, and ofcorse sit at the foot of the high chair at dinner. lol. since my kids have been born, we've at least 10 cats and never had one mean one. people always tell me that cats are not good pets for young kids, but i have never had a prob. with it. i think their great. even our old gray cat roy {pronouced wah} has never raised a claw to my kids, and he don't really like anybody! if he don't like something, he just hisses. i think it's the way you raise you kids to respect animals and the temperment of the animals that make people think that cats are not good with kids. if you teach respect to your kids, your kids will understand that you can't pull the cats tail and excpect them to like you. right now, my kids both have their own cats. stinker is jake's cat and raina has oobie. they named them, they help feed them, brush them, ect,,, course i still clean the litter,,lol. i think its a great leason for them. |
