So I kind of need some advice if you guys dont mind. My daughter is very little. Has been since day one. She was born 3 weeks late and only weighed 6 pounds now at age 2 she is 22 pounds. We took her to the doctor on monday and found out that she has actually dropped 3 pounds. just a few months ago she was 25 pounds. The doctor wants me to start giving Ellie fatty foods milkshakes ice cream and such. Ellie is by no means a picky eater nor a light eater. whatever we give her to eat she eats and then wants more and more. She is always wanting to eat. Which is why i was so suprised that she had actually lost weight. With the doctor's recommendation i just cant give her that stuff. I am not by any means a hard core healthy eater. we do eat healthy but the occasional milkshake or cookie is good for any kid but not on a regular basis. I just dont want her to get use to eating stuff like that. My husband and I talked about it for a while the other night and then again last night and we dont want to force her to eat if she isnt hungry and kind of just let her be a kid and eat what she wants and how much. I just dont know what other way i can get her to gain weight without having to give her all those sugary fatty foods. If anyone has any advice i would really appreciate it? I mean do you guys think that we should give her stuff like that or should we just let her be a 2 year old toddler. She is a very active little girl and loves to be up and playing. She is happy and has always been healthy. I am just very lost on this one. because on one hand i want her to gain the weight but on the other hand i want her to not grow up worring about it. Ok i should stop now but any advice or thoughts would be very helpful. Please. Thank you all so much. Crystal |

Wow! I have the opposite issue my 2yr. old is a healthy 30lbs. and my 10mo. old is already 27lbs. Has the doctor suggested doing a bone age study? It is very easy, they take 1 x-ray of her hand and then the Radiologist measures it to tell the age range of the skeleton. I take x-rays and we are always doing them to rule out any type of issue. As far as food goes I don't think I would want to load my kids up with all fat and sugar either but maybe you could consider a higher fat cheese and meats and do more carbs to help put on the weight. Good luck with everything and just remember that she is probably just a petite little peanut. Nicole |

If I were you, and this is just me being a worry wort, I would go to another doctor to get a second opinion. Not about the foods per say, but about the weight loss. Maybe there is something else going on that is causing the weight loss, especially if she is not a picky eater and eats lots of stuff. I am sure everything is fine, but I would talk to another doctor just to make sure.
But I have to admit I would not want to give my child all that either. Once she starts, she will not want to stop. So that would worry me as well. I wish I had the right answer on this one for you. Good luck and keep us informed! |

hey there! First of all, DONT WORRY!!! My son just turned 3 and is barely 30 lbs. The only way I even got him to 30 lbs is the pediasure. My son eats when and what he wants to basically. Sometimes he will goes days or even weeks with only agreeing to maybe one meal and a snack if I am lucky, other times he eats the roof off the house. Because he was so small and the dr's kept pushing me to feed him fatty cad for you foods, I looked around. I happen to have several pediatric clients that can only drink pediasure to sustain their life because of certain medical problems. I decided that if that has what it needs to supplement nutrients for kids that can not eat, then maybe I will try it for my son. I started giving my son one 8oz can of the pediasure for every meal he missed. Before too long he caught up in weight....well...at least he is on the chart now haha. Anyway, it comes in different flavors and my son loves it, drinking is something I have never had trouble getting him to do. Give it a try and good luck! |

Hey Crystal I can totally relate . My daughter Sarah is 20 months and barely weighs 20 lb. She has averaged 1 lb. every 3 months in her weight gain since about9 months of age. She was also little when she was born. She was 1 week before her due date and weighed 6lb. 1/2 oz. I had to go for cst scans and had 8 ultra sounds because she was little in utero. It is hard not to stress over itthough i totally know.Sarah does not eat junk food and doesnt want to She would rather eat fruit anyday. When we get to the store that is what she will ask for.I would get a second oppinion. Has your pedi. checked for anything called renal tubal acidosis. Srahs pedi tested her for that which it was neg. but it is common in small kids and generaly the kids are good eaters. Sarh has always been a good eater. Try not to worry i know easier said than done. I have cried stressing because I want her tyo gain so bad and i panic if she has one meal where she does not want to eat.Hang in there and i would get a second oppinion. |
