I give the 6 and 10 year old about 3 pages of math and english aday. to little or not? Do I have to buy a cirrume or not? I don't have one now but I think one would help.We are aiow income family of 5 so that makes it hard also. Also is it ok to wing it?

Ok, take a deep breath. Sounds like you are doing great! There is not set time that kids should do school. What works for your family is what works for you. Like for the boy's and I we get up at 7am (not everyone does this, this is just what works for us) and they eat, brush their teeth, and get dressed (if they want to). and by 10 or 11 am they are usually done. My youngest who is also 5 only does about an hour or two a day (depending on what we are doing) on "school" work. Now when you are homeschooling it's always hard in the beggining. I remember so well feeling exactly like you do. Just know it does get easier once you find a way for you and your kids to learn. And no you don't have to buy a curriculum to homeschool. I do but I am thinking next year I might not because I just don't see anything challenging enough for my oldest at the moment. There are many websites out there where you can get stuff free like www.starfall.com and they have interactive things for learning phonic's along with some free printables. The library is also an exellent way to get free books. We get a lot of our history, geography and science idea's from there. Also there is what they call unschooling which is basically child lead learning and you go by what they are wanting to learn about. I don't know all about it but it sounds interesting. Ok sorry if I have rambbled on but please don't feel bad. It sounds like you are doing a great job as it is. Oh and it's more than ok to wing it!! To tell you the truth I am horriable at math. I have to have things written down to do a math problem. Now my 7 year old can do it all in his head LOL. So no worries your children will learn. Even when it doesn't seem like they are listening. (((HUGS)))

It is super-okay to wing it, because that means you are flexible enough to stop doing something that doesn't work and try something else.

Your kids will let you know if you are giving them too much work - just watch their body language and energy levels. I don't worry about not giving "enough" work...I figure if we've done anything for a certain subject, then we're good.

I have bought very little curriculum this year. My first year I used a very structured program - Alpha Omega LifePacs. The second year I did pick-and-choose finding a different source of curriculum for each subject - and even flirted with unschooling (which didn't work out for our family). This year I am using resources on the internet, mostly. All I've purchased is ... well nothing. I got some books for literature through frugalreader.com. It's a trading books site.

I have quite a few resources on my personal website: http:kellylee.info. And if you put A2Z Homeschooling in any search engine their website will pop up. Also on my site, look on the homepage for the Educational Freebie Queen link. I have a whole semesters worth of professionally written curriculum (12 mini-courses) on various science topics affecting humans for grades 7-8 and 9-12 - and I got it FREE. So check out those freebies!

Like was said, as far as schedule, just do what works for your family. My kids are night owls, so they start their day at 9am, set school hours are 10-3 (but we never use up all that time), but after 3pm they are still learning: as Daniel watches the Military Channel, as Rachel organizes a party, as both tell their dad what the literature chapter we read was about).

I hope that helps some!

I have to agree with the last two ladies on this one. There really isn't a "right" or "wrong" way of homeschooling. It's more of what works for your family & what doesn't. As far as the amount of work goes, I have read that it takes less time for homeschoolers to get done with their work b/c you don't have to deal with all the getting all the students to behave & gathering them. BTW, I stressed about that as well until I did some reading up on it.
I have a website as well on homeschooling if you want to check it out. It www.educationalfreebiequeen.info. .
For the first year, it will be a bit of trial & error, but I'm sure you'll do fine. We're here to support each other. So, if you feel stressed, post you concerns like you just did & the support with come through! :-)
