awkward to talk about...
My son is just over 2 months old and for the past month when changing his diaper I have noticed that he has erections. It usually happens about 2-3 times per week and is mostly when I change him after he wakes from a nap. I didn't think that this happened to boys until they were around 3 or 4 years old. Is this very common or even normal?

This is absolutely normal. I have a 21 month old son and an 8 month old son. I freaked when my 6 week old son (first born) woke up with an erection. My husband started laughing, I called his mom (she raised 4 boys), my mom (whom raised 3), my grandmother (whom raised 4) and my husbands grandmother (whom raised 2) to see if it was normal. Now I laugh because both of my son's wake up constantly with them. I was so afraid to touch them, i didn't want to hurt them.

I was also kinda freaked out by this. I knew it was normal because i remember with my little brother. It is very common. Dont feel silly at all.

Not silly at all. It is very much normal. I have two boy's and they both had them all the time as baby's. They are 7 and 5 now so I don't really have to deal with that part of them much any more LOL but I am sure they do deal with it.

I have a 10 mth old and he will get them off/on...I guess it lets you know that it's working properly right?!!??

My 17 month old son gets them ALL THE TIME after he wakes up from a nap or when he wakes up from sleeping when he went to bed. It normally goes down within a few seconds after the air hits it. The first time me and my husband ever saw that happen my husband yelled out "That a boy!!!" But be careful when you change his diaper cause he just might pee on you!!!

any suggestions for how to explain why it does that when they ask?

It's definitely normal for that to happen. I always thought, what in the world could he be dreaming about for that to happen? Its something they can't control, but you have to learn to dodge the streaming pee. I know i kinda freaked when he started touching it, but I soon learned that that was normal too. Just think what we have to look forward to when they get older, and we know what it is from. Yikes! Good luck.

SO normal!
Our son is 17 months now and he is going through a phase where he just wants to grab his "PeePee" whenever his diaper's not on...so much for bath toys! HA!

I have a 16 month old who enjoys touching it as well (it still freaks me out!)...he gets erections when I change him. Isn't that typical of any man...once his pants come off he gets an erection?! hahaha.

question, how many of the boys that constantly get erections are circumsized... my son is not circumsize and if he gets them they are not like "bam" thats an erection!!

Is it possible that if the baby boy's penis is circumsized that it would be more sensitive... [at least at first, as adults there is supposedly less sensitivity because of constant friction with clothing and elements] to any stimulation

my sons are not circumsized and their erections really freaked me out until my husband said "honey, it's NOT sexual, it's being manipulated and it's normal" now i still kinda feel weird, but it's better. . .

Yes its so normal. My boys are 5 and 4 and i noticed them real young getting them. I see them every so often now. But funny story, the 5 yr old came out of the bathroom one night and laid on the couch and his was sticking straight up. My husband and I couldnt stop laughing. Of course he had no clue what we were laughing out, But it was like a little man laying on the couch.

Its completely normal. Think about the organ - It is filled with blood vesselsas well as 2 tracks including one for urine. It is the pressure of the fluid in these vessels are what cause an erection. Its not sexual and it still happens when they are grown and normally has nothing to do with sexual thoughts. They just need to relieve themselves.
